During the reign of Jamal Abdul Nasir, (the dictator of Egypt famous for the nationalistic phrase “Arab for Arab, non-Arab for non-Arab”) Hamza al-Basyounee tortured manyMuslims in prison. He wickedly scoffed, “Where is your Lord so that I can put him insteel?” Far above Allah is from what the oppressors say! A truck smashed into Hamza’scar killing him, and appropriately, the truck was transporting rods of steel. One rod of steel entered his body from the top of his head until it made its way down to his bowels. The rescue team was unable to extract him from the car except in pieces.
And he and his host were arrogant in the land, without right,--and they thought that theywould never return to Us. Qur’an 28:39 And they said: “Who is mightier than us in strength?” See they not that Allah, Whocreated them, was mightier in strength than them. Qur’an 41:15 Pg. 313
A man asked ‘Antara, “What is the secret to your bravery, for you are known for your ability to overpower men?” He replied, “Put your finger in my mouth and let me put minein yours.” Each put his finger into the mouth of the other and each one of them began to bite the finger of the other, slowly increasing in intensity. Within a very short span of time, the man could hold out no longer and he let out a shrill scream, and so ‘Antaraloosed the hold his jaws had on the man’s finger. ‘Antara said, “This is how I overpower champions”: in other words, with patience and forbearance.

Ibn Al-Jawzi mentioned something he witnessed that was wonderful yet strange. A blindsnake lived on a branch at the top of a tree. A bird would come to it with food in itsmouth. It would chirp a signal to the snake, which in return would open its mouth andallow the bird to insert the food. All praise and glory belongs to Allah, Who made thisone to help the other.
Nor a bird that flies with its two wings, but are communities like you. Qur’an 6:38
One day, I was sitting in the
 Haram
in Makkah; it was a sultry day and the noon prayer was about to begin, when I noticed an old man distributing
 Zamzam
water. He would filla few cups, give them out to people, and then he would return and repeat the process. Hecontinued doing so for some time until he became soaked in sweat. I was amazed at thefortitude of this old man and at his love for doing kind deeds. He would give a smile anda cup of water to as many people as he was able to serve. It made me appreciate that, if Allah guides one to doing a good deed, one will do it with a smile, even when it involveshard work.Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) put his own life at risk on the road toMadeenah in order to protect the Messenger of Allah (pbuh). In order to feed his guests, Hatim would sleep on a hungry stomach.Abu ‘Ubaydah would stand guard at night in order to give rest to the Muslimarmy.‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would walk through the streets at nightwhile people were asleep in order to ensure their safety. And in the year of the greatfamine he would go hungry in order to feed the people.
