Ivan Pillay Deputy Commissioner: South African Revenue Service (SARS)

Ivan has been a political activist since 1971 and was involved in the activities of various civil and political organisations prior to joining the African National Congress (ANC) underground in 1975. He went into exile in 1977 where he served in various capacities in Umkonto we Sizwe, armed wing of the ANC, and the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the South African Congress and SACTU. He participated in the Convention for a Democratic South Africa (CODESA) negotiation process (to end apartheid) on returning to South Africa in 1991, before being appointed as a member of the interim administration which served the Transitional Executive Council of the country prior to the 1994 elections. He played a role in the amalgamation process of the Civilian Intelligence Services, which culminated in the formation of National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the South African Security Services (SASS), serving in NIA and SASS from 1995 to 1999, before moving to the South African Revenue Services (SARS). For the past decade, as member of the SARS Executive and the executive accountable for enforcement and compliance risk, he has helped to shape, to develop and implement SARSs compliance strategy. He is serving as the Deputy Commissioner of SARS since May 2010.
