The Kingdom o Lesotho, a small landlocked country with apopulation o two million, has aced increasing demand toits health-care system because o AIDS, economic challengesand declining resources available or health care. In response,the government embarked on a long-term reorm process toimprove the efciency o the sector. As part o this eort, itturned to the private sector to create a sustainable heath-carewaste management system that protects public health and theenvironment.
Lesotho: Medical Waste PPP
Mediwaste, a consortium between Ditau Health Solutions, a South Arican frm, andMatsete Investments, a local company, won the tender. Under the terms o the agree-ment, the consortium will create a pilot system to collect, treat and incinerate hazard-ous medical waste in an area serving 300,000 people. The management agreementwas signed in October 2012.IFC’s advisory work was supported by technical assistance unds rom the governmento Japan.
