For the frst time ater nearly 20 years o almost no electricity,the 1.5 million citizens o Monrovia will be able to look orwardto increasingly available commercial power services thanks toa management-contract set up with the assistance o IFC and agroup o international donors.
Liberia: Liberia Electricity Corp.
In April 2010, IFC concluded the design and tendering o a fve-year managementcontract or the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), the electricity utility in the capi-tal city o Monrovia. Manitoba Hydro International (MHI) o Canada was awardedthe management contract, and took over LEC operations on July 1, 2010. The Euro-pean Union, Norway, USAID and the World Bank will provide approximately US$50million in donor unds or the operator to greatly expand and improve electricityservices in Monrovia over the next fve years.The advisory work was supported by DevCo, a multi-donor program afliatedwith the Private Inrastructure Development Group. DevCo is unded by the UK’sDepartment or International Development, the Dutch Ministry o Foreign Aairs, theSwedish International Development Agency, and the Austrian Development Agency.
