Ilan-Ton
Your weekly update on all the amazing things going on atCamp Ilan!
Message from our Camp Director

This week’s focus at Camp Ilan was Kavod Habriyot, respecting people. Weworked hard in trying to teach the importance of treating our friends, parents, strangers, and all human beings with proper Kavod. We started the week baking cookies with volunteer Alyssa Grunstein. Thecampers got together and learned how to bake amazing stained glass cookieswith lollipops and other goodies. Don’t worry, we provided them with the recipeso they can make them for you! On Wednesday, we played a really fun gamecalled ‘Picture Perfect’. The bunks competed against each other takingcreative pictures of special scenarios. The kids were extremely creative andfunny, and at the end of the day, we got together to see all the pictures andvote on the funniest ones. On Thursday, we said goodbye to Camp Ilan andhello to Arbraska. All of our campers from grades 1 and up went to Mount St.Gregoire for tree climbing and zip lining. The kindergarten campers stayed back at camp, but were greeted by Creative T-shirts. They drew and made their veryown t-shirts. Afterwards, they went on a stroll to the Cote Saint Luc splash park.As amazing as Thursday sounds, Friday was even more special! As I mentioned, being that this week’s theme is Kavod Habriyot, we invited children from ChaiLifeline to have fun with us at camp. These amazing and heroic children joinedour bunks at camp and participated in our daily program. The Chai Lifeline Kidsbaked challah, sang Shabbat songs, breakdanced, and played sports. Thisexperience really demonstrated the importance of Kavod Habriyot to our campers and I can say that it had a positive effect bothon the Chai Lifeline kids, and on our campers and staff. We are approaching the last week of Camp Ilan. It is avery bittersweet time, but I think it will be our best week yet!Shabbat Shalom,Zack Isakow

DVAR TORAHParshat Devarim
Moshe tells the Jews that the Torah is the focalpoint of life and living, around which all otherthings revolve: “Our God spoke to us at Sinai, saying, “You have dwelt long enough at thismountain. Travel to the mountain of Emori, andto all its neighbouring places, in the plain, onthe mountain, and in the lowland, and in thesouth and by the seashore, the land of theCanaanites, and the Lebanon, until the greatriver…”" (1:6,7) Sinai was a monumental event.Rashi notes how at that moment, the Jews weregiven Torah, mitzvos, the Mishkan, its utensils, government. R Ahron Bakst notes that theopening mention of Sinai does not continue withfurther discussion of that incredible moment, but rather, that the Jews must move on. Moshesays that once Sinai is achieved and actualised,– it’s time to get going. The Torah is instructions for living. RShamshon Raphael Hirsch notes that the Torahis given in the desert – a bubble, a vacuum of civilisation. Their economy was suspended forforty years – everything was free, easy, andabundant. Life was elemental. Life was strippedof its grandeur, power and glory; they were inthe womb, so to speak. This is how the Torah isearned and acquired. This is also the function of exile – a return tothe wilderness, a return to the womb toreacquaint ourselves with our duties.Moshe told the people that if the heights of theTorah can be retained, going out into the worldis not scary; it is natural. This is the shininglight we can be.From gtorah.com
