ARTIST’S EXPLANATION AND PREFACE
When I was 25, a poor student living in a fifth floor walkup in New York City, I made an enormous India ink drawing I called The Chimera.
It pictured a ferocious and unreal animal dominating four smaller creatures: a smiling satyr, a sagacious serpent, an angry ape and a sensuous woman with the head of a cat.
Hopefully, I invested in having the work matted and took it to the Whitney Museum where an open entry competition was in progress. It’s not that you’re too insignificant for us...

I took my chimera back up the five flights. Abstract Expressionism was king. I was not an abstract artist. I was a writer of fiction and poetry, a Ph.D. candidate in Literature at Columbia University and part-time professor.
