ix
Stand Up for What You Believe
in . . . or Can You?
There is always an argument about which organ
system is most important. Some say it is the heart.
Without the heart, the brain would not get nourishment
and survive. Some say it is the brain.
Although the heart can beat without a brain, to do
more than merely exist an organism needs to have
some degree of consciousness and purpose. I
would argue that both the heart and the brain are
important. However, the musculoskeletal system is
the most important because it allows us to act,
react, and be human! That is not to diminish the
importance of the heart and brain. As is very clear,
the former provides nourishment for the musculoskeletal
structures while the latter controls the
complex movements of which the structures are
capable. If not for our musculoskeletal system, we
would be amorphous blob creatures unable to do
the exquisite activities that we do like dance, run,
show expression, and communicate. The brain
allows thought, and the musculoskeletal system
allows follow-through and expression of the
thought.
