AUSTRALIAN SCHOLAR TO ROW FOR CAMBRIDGE

Cambridge Australia Scholarships (CAS) is delighted to announce that one of its current scholars, Alexander Fleming, has been selected to row in the 159th Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race on Sunday 31 March. Born in Australia, Alex took his first degree in Biology and Economics at Brown University in the USA, and is now studying at the University of Cambridge (Pembroke College) for an MPhil in Management. He is supported by a Patrick Moore Cambridge Australia Scholarship, one of many awards offered jointly by the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and CAS. Along with his crew-mates, Alex has been through a gruelling training programme, on and off the water, over the last six months, all building towards the race itself, which takes place over a 6.8km stretch of the River Thames in west London. First held in 1829, Cambridge leads the victory table with 81 wins to Oxfords 76 (and one dead heat in 1877). Alex will row in the 3 seat. CAS is proud of Alex's achievements, and wishes him every success on the river.

Cambridge Australia Scholarships, formerly known as the Cambridge Australia Trust, provides scholarships for outstanding Australian graduates to undertake Masters and Ph.D studies at the University of Cambridge, England. Around 1000 Australians have been supported by the Cambridge Australia Scholarships (and its predecessor organisation) since establishment in the 1980s. Currently 25 CAS scholars are resident in Cambridge, including Lilly Brown, the first indigenous Australian to attend Cambridge on scholarship awarded joint by the Charlie Perkins Trust, CAS and the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust.
