PAST LIVES, PAST LOVES ‘Paula’s your name in this life‘Chantelle’ in your lastYou played the lead in both of themWith all the world the cast‘Gregory’ was my chosen nameAn English boy was ISent to France to fight the warI dropped from out the skyI met my ‘Chantelle’ in the woodsWe touched and fell in loveA few short months we were as oneMy ‘Mamouselle’, my doveThe ‘Germans’ took your CountrySwept through it like the plagueIn Villages and in TownshipsFrench faces looking vagueTorture and pure slaveryYou suffered at their handsThen you, a fighting SpiritDecide to make a standYou join ‘The French Resistance’And move up to the hillsAt the tender age of twenty-one

You’re honing fighting skillsYour job, to meet us agentsOur parachutes to hideGuard us with your ‘Sten- Guns’Fighting by our sideWe ran the ‘Nazi’ GauntletThrough roadblocks we would blazeThey called us ‘The Untouchables’The Germans we’d eraseThen under torture someone brokeAn ambush they did laySurrounded by the ‘SS Troops’As night turned into dayThe bullets flying round our headsMe wounded, then escapedI left you to your DestinyYou captured, Tortured, RapedI never saw your face againThe last I heard, you’d goneOn transports into GermanyFrightened and aloneNo word of you for many MonthsMissing, believed dead

Then ‘Belsen’ liberatedSo many, starved and bledYour name was on the recordsOf ‘Prisoners’ in the campI flew across to find youA place so dead and dampI searched amongst the broken WomenThousands wandered thereThen found someone who’d known youMy ‘Chantelle’ held so dearThen came the news I feared so muchShe’d seen you ‘shot-at-dawn’To hide the Ghastly evidenceKilled by those ‘Devil’s Spawn’To England I returned that dayTo live my life without youDeepest sadness in my heartThe bravest Girl I knewI lived until a ‘Ripe old age’But never did forgetThe Girl I fell in love withHer death my ‘big regret’But now onto another life
