ASSOCIATION OF SELF ADVOCATES OF NORTH CAROLINACONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS
ARTICLE 1 – NAMESection 1.
The name of the association shall be Association of Self Advocates of North Carolina.
ARTICLE 2 – PURPOSESection 1.
The purpose of the association is:
A.
To serve as a collective voice for people with developmentaldisabilities.
B.
To provide a statewide network in which participants can meetother self advocates to exchange ideas, give and receivesupport, and work together on common goals.
C.
To encourage persons with developmental disabilities to takean active role in the community and to pursue their personalgoals and dreams.D.To facilitate individualization and full integration in themainstream of society.E.To increase each member’s ability to take charge of his/her own life.
F.
To help people with developmental disabilities take a stand insociety.
 
G.
To increase community awareness of the value, rights, andabilities of people with developmental disabilities.
H.
To promote both services and laws appropriate to meet the needs and to enhance the status of persons withdevelopmental disabilities.
I.
To encourage the development of local self advocacy groupsacross the state of North Carolina.
Section 2. 
This association is a nonprofit, nonpolitical, nonsectariancorporation. No part of any net earnings shall inure to the benefit of,or be distributable to, its members, directors, or officers, except thatthe association shall be authorized and empowered to payreasonable compensation for services rendered and to makepayments and distributions in furtherance of purposes set forth in thearticles of incorporation and the constitution and bylaws. Thecorporation shall not participate in, or intervene in (including thepublishing or distribution of statements) any political campaign onbehalf of any candidate for public office. Nonwithstanding, any other provisions of these articles, the corporation shall not carry on anyother activities not permitted to be carried on (a) by a corporationexempt from Federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of theInternal Revenue Code, or (b) by a corporation, contributions to whichare deductible under Section 170 (c)(2) of the Internal RevenueCode.
Section 3. 
This association is organized exclusively for charitable andeducational purposes and shall not participate in or carry on anyactivities not permitted to be carried on (a) by a corporation exemptfrom federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the InternalRevenue Code, or corresponding section of any future federal taxcode, or (b) by a corporation, contributions to which are deductibleunder Section 170 (c)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code, or corresponding section of any future federal tax code.
 
ARTICLE 3 – MEMBERSHIPSection 1. 
All members must agree with the mission and purpose of theassociation.
Section 2. 
Membership in the Association is for a period of one calendar year and membership in good standing requires that the individual hascompleted a membership application or the convention registrationform and has paid membership dues. Membership in the association shall consist of the followingcategories:Full voting members:Individuals with developmental disabilities who are members ingood standing. All voting members are allowed all the benefits of theASANC and will be allowed one vote at official business meetings of the association.Associate members:a)Individuals who do not have a disability.
 b)
Individuals who have disabilities other than a developmentaldisability.c)Organizations, corporations or businessesd)Persons with developmental disabilities aged 16-18.Associate members may participate in all activities of the associationbut do not vote on actions of the association.Self Advocacy Group Members:Local self advocacy groups will have at least five members, anelected leader, and will meet at least quarterly. All members willreceive all mailings of the association.
