.Known as ‘pan’ in India is an evergreen climberthat is grown for its leaves Betel leaves has goodexport potential and India exports betel leaves tothe countries like Pakistan, BangladeshWhen, under normal conditions, the vines in ayear grow to height of 10'-12' and their vigour toproduce normal sized leaves gets reduced, theyneed rejuvenation. This rejuvenation is achieved bylowering the vines down to the ground level atleast once a year.Another consideration is that when vines growtoo high along the supports, the leaves areharvested with a ladder. Betel vine is a cropdemanding frequent irrigation, and it is not alwaysthat the farmer has the means to meet this
 
requirement without difficulty. The problem iseased by lowering the vines, since after loweringthe vines, do not demand as much water.Further, the yield of leaves in Betel vinegardens depends on the number of primarybranches. In new plantation, each sett producesonly one primary vine. But after the vine islowered, a number of primaries are produced fromthe nodes on the lowered vine. In view of all theseconsiderations, lowering of the vines has a specialsignificance in betel vine cultivation. In AndhraPradesh it is done from March- May and then tanksilt is applied @80 - 100 cartloads / ac on the coiledvines for firmness. In Kadapah –AP area lowering isdone twice a year i.e. in June-July and December.Before the first lowering, no leaves areharvested, excerpt in places where the life of thecrop is just above 3 years. But prior to subsequentlowering, all the leaves on the vine except a fewtender ones at the top arc removed. Then the vine
