Siddhma and vidya
Caturvimsma is the name of the twenty-forth divisional chart, but those initiated into its practice call this chart siddhma as from this chart all knowledge and abilities that the native acquires can be known. Prara confirms this in the fourth loka of the chapter on divisional consideration (vargaviveka). Specifically Prara uses the word; vidya, to describe the siddhma. The meaning if vidya is given hereunder.

Vidya

Vidya means knowledge. This knowledge is of two types namely pra vidya (spiritual knowledge) and a-pra vidya (material knowledge). When Vidya becomes understood it becomes jna. Vidya is seen from the fourth house in the horoscope. Sukha is seen from the same house, and promises that with knowledge comes happiness and satisfaction. Also satisfaction cannot come without knowledge. The kraka of the fourth house is the Moon and rightly its the first knowledge that comes is the mother tongue, or the language of ones parents. The fourth house is responsible for our attainment of knowledge. This process of attaining knowledge is called prama. This happens in three stages called; pratyaka, anumna and abda. The explanation of each is given below. This process of attaining knowledge starts from the fourth house through the observance of an object with any of the five senses. Having observed the object through smell, sight, etc., the native begins to find similarities or differences in the object in comparison to other objects. This is new knowledge, hence the knowledge is getting transformed and this happens in the eighth house from the fourth, namely the eleventh house.

Having digested the knowledge, the native finds final satisfaction in being able to explain this knowledge to others through the power of speech. This satisfaction comes from the fourth from the eleventh house, i.e. the second house where speech takes place. The perfect union of these three processes results in prijta yoga, where the native attains any knowledge or object of their desire when the lords of the fourth, eleventh and second houses are associated. This yoga is seen in the ri of knowledgeable people. If a weakness be found in any of these three bhvas, the native will have problems in attaining knowledge due to that specific process. The siddhma is the twenty-forth division and arises out of the 24 hor in a day/night, lorded by the Sun and Moon respectively. These luminaries are the source of all knowledge, and hence the seat or basis of the siddhma, namely knowledge.

Cancer and Leo

Para Vidya comes from the Sun and Leo, whilst a-pra Vidya comes from the Moon and Cancer; hence the Siddhma is counted from Leo in odd signs and from Cancer in even signs. The order is forward and zodiacally. Each portion is for a span of 115. Example: if the Sun is placed in 237 degrees of Pisces, then eighteen siddhma have passed, and the planet is in the nineteenth siddhma. Since Pisces is an even sign, the counting will start from Cancer. The nineteenth sign from cancer is the equivalent to the seventh sign (after deduction of twelve) from Cancer, i.e. Capricorn. Hence the Sun is placed in Capricorns siddhma.

Twelve siddha

The twelve deities for the siddhma are; Skanda, Parudhara, Anala, Vivakarma, Bhaga, Mitra, Maya, Antaka, Vadhvaja, Govinda, Madana and Bhma. They repeat twice, and their order is reversed for even signs. The planets occupying the divisions of these deities will influence the natives attitude and approach to knowledge and education. The lagna lords deity shows how the native learns the best, whilst the tenth lord indicates how they work and teach the knowledge to others. One can usually see the nature of the deity joined the tenth lord of siddhma, when the native is teaching/presenting a topic, as the person will act like the particular deity.

Use of siddhma
The first formal education is seen from the fourth house - this is the primary education encompassing primary school and high school. The ninth, second and seventh houses are the following three stages of College/Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate respectively. The bhvas succeed each other by being placed in the sixth house from each other. This is based on the upachaya principle of growth. There can be no more stages after this. Being that the seat of education is the fourth house and the house of the mother, the blessing of the mother become very important for one to succeed in ones education. Specifically for learning, the mother takes on the form of Sarasvat. These forms sit with the Guru in his four forms and can be worshipped with four mantras for the purpose of completing education. Its apparent that the formal education revolves around the principles of the fourth house and Moon, and from these we can derive some principles to approach the charts. The nature of the education is seen from the planets in the particular house, the lord and the aspects (graha di).

Case studies

Rule 1: The placement of the lord of the fourth house will show the aspiration of the native in their education. If it is badly placed then education may not be important to the native, whilst if the fourth lord is placed in the second house, then the aspiration is to attain a masters degree. Chart 1: Tagore, Rabindranath

In the ri a parivartana between second and fourth lords occur, whilst eleventh lord is aspecting the second house, whilst its dispositor is also placed there. This forms a partial prijta yoga for knowledge. Lest to say that the dispositor of the eleventh lord has caused the prijta yoga to be complete and is exalted. Because of the involvement of the dispositor we may infer that the involvement of a third party was significant in causing the natives rise through the prijta yoga.

In siddhma, the fourth lord Sun is joined the Nodes; hence Mr. Tagore did not study beyond primary education. However this same combination is a grahaa yoga supported by Jupiter, which would make him rise beyond the expectations of others. He had a lot of informal learning and did not follow the normal system of education.

Rule 2: If the lord of the fourth is in the ninth or vice versa, then the transition from primary education to college/bachelors is smooth. Similarly the lords of other educations associated with each other, cause a smooth transition between them. Chart 2: Female Master Degree holder

Partial prijta Yoga is formed by second and fourth lords. When the eleventh lord is not linked to the fourth lord, the conscious mind does not digest their knowledge properly. This can give forgetfulness. Since eleventh lord is joined Ketu, mistakes and accidents causes the natives lack of opportunity to digest their knowledge. Appeasing this Ketu will remove obstacles in the natives learning.

In siddhma, Saturn is joined the Moon in fourth forming a Kalika yoga. Since this is in a house of formal education, it will give a lot of spiritual knowledge in that phase. Nodes in fourth should disrupt primary education completely, but ninth lord of college education is placed in the fourth, ensuring that she will have a smooth transition to her college studies. Again due to second lord in the ninth, a smooth transition will be between college and masters program. However since second lord is in the bdhaka sthna as well, some problem must occur during the masters program. Mercury is the planet in bdhaka sthna, and indicates a problem at the time of registering the education, or upon the end of the education, as Mercury rules the sandhis of a day. Similarly Sun, Venus and Jupiter rules the beginning of the education, whilst Moon, Mars and Saturn rules the end of the education, i.e. final exams or the months prior to final exams.

Rule 3: The Moons sign will indicate the fixity of the persons mind in education. The Moon in a fixed sign gives the person a very strong ability to concentrate and also gives fixity of mind. Moon in a movable sign causes lack of fixity and makes the person easily distractible. Dual signs indicate a balanced level of fixity and ability to digest external or distracting circumstances. The sign and dispositor will indicate the inspiration for the fixity or distraction. Chart 3: Ambani, Dhirubhai Hirachand

In siddhma, fourth lord is in the eighth house, whilst Saturn and Mars are in the fourth itself. He did not complete his primary education. When Moon is also in a movable sign, it is hard for the person to focus on primary education and complete it.

Rule 4: The particular bhva ruling the education in the siddhma, when associated with the nodes will give enormous difficulty in completing the education. The Sun and Moon become the important planets in the siddhma. The nodes cause the eclipse of the Sun and Moon, and will disrupt the education of the native. Chart 4: Male Jyotia

In siddhma, ninth lord is joined the nodes hence the native should not be advised to study beyond College. However because second lord is retrograde, there will be a strong desire to study for Masters. Venus is the most benefic planet and aspects the second house, and hence a degree in management (MBA) was sought, but was unsuccessful due to the conjunction of the nodes on Venus and Venus is also debilitated. Jupiter being the lord of the second house, made him try for a Masters in Jyotia, but the school itself was closed in the middle of his studies - again the nodes caused the problem - this time in Ketu Antara da.

Chart 5: Male Bachelor degree holder

In siddhma, the ninth lord is in the second house giving a smooth transition between College and Masters. Ninth lord is also bdhakea and is exalted, which removes all obstacles. However, Saturn is joined and Saturns Antara da will be very inauspicious for education. Saturn indicates final exams. The native has been unable to attain eligibility through the CAT-exams to join for masters program many times since Saturns Antara da. Venus Antara is coming up and will bring him into the masters program. om tat sat
