A talk given by Sant Kirpal Singh at Sawan Ashram, New Delhi, India
Man is in search o happiness, but has no peace o mind. Even i he succeeds in achieving his objec-tives, he remains dissatised. His search or peaceand happiness, thereore, never ends. Saint Augus-tine says that God gave us the senses or using themproperly, but we misuse them by indulging in sen-sual pleasures; whereas the bliss or which we shouldhave striven remains enshrined in scriptures only.Man is an ensouled entity gied with body, mind, and intellect. He takes good care o his body or thesake o his domestic, social, and political well-being.Intellectually, he has made strident advances. He hassuccessully explored the earth, oceans, and spaceand has made atomic bombs. A single atom bombcan destroy millions. Strangely enough, with all hisachievements he remains ignorant about the primesource o energy rom which his body and mind de-rive their strength – soul – his true sel. He has somuch identied himsel with the body that he is un-able to distinguish his soul rom the body.In act, he does not know that his real sel is some-thing separate rom the body. Have we ever thoughtabout the propelling orce in us? Have we recognizedthe indweller o the house?Soul is a conscious entity. Just as any essence has itsbasic source, soul too has an ultimate source – theOversoul – a vast ocean o All-Consciousness. Teentire universe is His maniestation. Te soul is iden-tied with the material body by constant associationwith the senses. Man does not know that he canhave true happiness only when he is able to disran-chise the sel in him rom the outer vestures. He isso much entangled with the mind and body that heever remains unhappy and restless. Soul being con-scious and body being material, these cannot coexistamiably. We pretend to be religious by reading the scriptureswithout knowing their true import and by oeringceremonial prayers at the places o worship. All thatwe worship is physical health and worldly riches. Weaspire or material well-being and not or God-reali-zation. It is said that once Majnu, a legendary lover, was told that God wished to see him. Majnu repliedi that was so, God must come in the orm o Lila, his beloved. Most o us oer our prayers to God only because we want to ull our worldly ambitions. Weseek God‘s blessings to become physical and intellec-tual giants. Tus, to us God is only a means to world-ly ends. Consequently, we get only that we crave or;i.e., the material world and not God.o know God we must rst know ourselves. Fromtime immemorial many have tried to dene Godphilosophically. But He remains undened as ever.God cannot be realized by the body or intellect orsenses. He can only be experienced by the soul. Un-less we know ourselves, the question o knowing Goddoes not arise. Tus, the rst step in this directionis sel-knowledge which precedes God-knowledge.„Know thysel“ has been the call o Saints and sages.Guru Nanak was once asked by a Muslim holy manto dene His aith. Te Guru replied that He neitherclaimed to be a Hindu nor a Muslim in the ordinary sense. He explained that His body was Composed o ve elements – ether, earth, re, water, and air – andthe God Power was pulsating in Him.Hazur (Baba Sawan Singh Ji)was once asked as towhich religion He belonged. He replied: ‚I God isHindu, I am a Hindu; i He is Sikh, I am a Sikh; i Heis Muslim, I am a Muslim; i He is a Christian, thenI am a Christian.“All religions are man-made. God has not put a stampo religion on anyone. o know the ControllingPower o the universe, it is inevitable and essential to

„know thysel,“ as Christ has put it. Guru Nanak hasalso said: „Until and unless one analyses one‘s sel, itis not possible to shed delusion and realize the Re-ality.“ Unless your Tird Eye is opened, you cannotrealize God.How various Saints have solved the mystery o lie isthe subject or today. Te act is that ruth is one, butthe ways o expression may be dierent. Our idealis ruth. Let us see what Swami Ji has to say on thesubject: „Link your soul with Naam.“We are advised to connect our soul with the Word.It implies that our attention is presently linked withsomething other than the Word. What is meant by attention? It is consciousness, a state o awakeningor awareness. We may call it attention, spirit, or soul.It is this lie current emanating rom our sel (soul)which acts as a driving orce within us. Swami Ji asksus to link this current with the Word. Now, where isthe source o these currents? It is at the seat o thesoul between the two eyebrows. What happens at thetime o death? Lie withdraws rom the eet and risesto the back o the eyes. Te power which is concen-trated behind the eyes is our real sel. Aer that pow-er is withdrawn, the body is o no signicance. Tisis the most important and mostly ignored subject. In order to probe urther into this subject, one has torealize that soul is an entity distinct rom the body.We have to learn and practice to withdraw the soulcurrents rom lower centres o the body to the eyeocus. Tis process is similar to the one undergoneby the soul at the time o one‘s physical death. Wehave to rise above body-consciousness. Te theoreti-cal knowledge o this process is not enough. Practiceis ar more important. An ounce o practice is morethan tons o theory. So we have to link our soul with the Word. Let usnow consider what the Word (Naam) signies. TeWord has two aspects. One is an epithet and the otheris that ultimate Power to which the epithet reers. Forexample, water itsel is one thing, but it is reerred toby many names; e.g., water, aqua, H20, etc. Similarly,ruth is one; but sages have described it in variousways. Guru Nanak says: „I want to sacrice mysel on all Ty Names, 0 Lord.“ Guru Gobind Singh (thetenth Sikh Guru) compiled hundreds o Names o God in His work „Jaap Sahib.“ Tese Names are inaddition to those already mentioned in the variousscriptures. Despite hundreds o Names, God is one.Similarly, there are many religions; but their goal isone. We have to understand the God Power with the helpo spoken Names. Tis is our rst step. Tough thename is not dierent rom the Named, yet it seemsso until the Named is actually contacted. A persontastes a mango and declares that it is sweet. But onewho has neither seen a mango nor tasted sugar, can-not know how sweet it is. Tus, to realize God is o utmost importance. We have to make a beginningwith spoken Names. It is unortunate that peoplequarrel over the dierent Names o God as given by the ounders o the various religions. All the Namesreer to the supreme Lord; and, as such, Tey all de-serve our respect. Te real thing is the Power-o-Godto which these Names reer. Tat Power is eternalruth. It is One, will ever remain One, and is calledNaam or the Word.Te Word is the source o the entire creation andcan be experienced only with the help o a Satguru(true Master). Guru Nanak has explained this pointlucidly in the Jap Ji: „Whatever has come into beingis the creation o the Word.“ Te Word is the Powerthat exists in the minutest speck in the universe. Tatis the Divine Link that connects the body with thesoul. When this Link breaks, it brings about physicaldeath. It is the same Link which sustains the universeand higher spiritual planes. When this Divine Link iswithdrawn, there is total dissolution. Now, the question arises, i we are connected withthe Divine Link, which is the point in the body atwhich the two meet? Guru Nanak tells us that theWord can be contacted aer one transcends the sixchakras (ganglionic centres) and has reached theAgyay chakra (behind and between the two eye-brows). Te Divine link can be established only thereand not anywhere else in the body. Rishi Patanjalias also other past Saints have explained this proc-ess. When one reaches the Agyay chakra aer rising
