In October 2008, the FAO Interdepartmental Working Group on Bioenergyrecommended the preparation of this review paper on algae-based biofuels as areference platform for possible future work of the Organization. Development of thereview paper was coordinated by Alessandro Flammini (GBEP Secretariat) under theoverall guidance of Mr Jeff Tschirley (Chair, FAO Bioenergy Working Group).The lead author of this paper is Sjors van Iersel (Ecofys) with supporting inputsfrom Liliana Gamba, Andrea Rossi, Sacha Alberici, Bart Dehue, Jasper van de Staaijand Alessandro Flammini.We would like to acknowledge the valuable contributions of Prof. Mario Tredici(University of Florence), Lew Fulton (IEA), Soufien Taamallah (IEA), Joel Cuello(University of Arizona), Jim Sears (Algal Biomass Organization), Mohammad Hasan(FAO, Fisheries Department) and other FAO colleagues, who provided inputs andsupport in the preparation of this paper.
