Suite aux graves échecs subis durant les missions de maintien de la paix en Somalie en 1993, auRwanda en 1994 et en Bosnie, une réflexion en profondeur s'impose. Comment l'ONU peut-elle rendreces missions plus efficaces? Comment la communauté internationale doit-elle s'acquitter de sa
responsabilité de protéger 
? Lakhdar Brahimi, ancien ministre des Affaires étrangères d'Algérie(1993-1997) est l'homme qui a présidé à cette réflexion et signé le rapport qui porte aujourd'hui son nom surles missions de maintien de la paix contemporaines. C'est également un témoin privilégié de notretemps. Il a servi l'ONU dans plusieurs points chauds de notre planète, notamment en Haïti, au Congo,au Libéria et, plus récemment, en Afghanistan (2002-2004) et en Irak. Pouvoir l'écouter n'est rien demoins qu'un privilège. Sa causerie prendra la forme d'un dialogue avec le journaliste Jean-FrançoisLépine de Radio-Canada.Following the failures of peace keeping missions in Somalia in 1993, in Rwanda in 1994 and in Bosnia,a fundamental review becomes compulsory. How can those missions be made more efficient? How canthe International Community fulfills its
responsibility to protect?
Lakhdar Brahimi who was theMinister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria from 1993 to 1997, chaired the UN Panel on Peace Operationswhich produced the famous report that now bears his name and which has defined UN current approachto peace keeping. He is also a key witness of our times, having served the UN in numerous troubleareas, notably in Haiti, in Congo, in Liberia, and more recently, in Afghanistan (2002-2004) and in Irak.Having the possibility to listen to him is a privilege. His conference will take the form of a dialoguewith Jean-François Lépine, journalist from Radio-Canada.
