Heavy rainfall has been nuisance for farms
By NICK COHEN
The Shamong Sun
While the region has becomefrustrated with constant rainyforecasts, pop up thunderstormsand accustomed to never leavinghome without an umbrella, localfarms and produce stands aredealing with the weather at amuch more personal level.“We’ve been affected by theweather, there’s no doubt. Fromthe lack of sunlight to lack of po-tential yields in the future, it hasdefinitely impacted us,” saidJoann Gsell, a member of theRusso family and employee atRusso’s Farm Market in Taberna-cle.The amount of rainfall was un-like any other in history for June, confirmed by The American As-sociation of State Climatologists.New Jersey’s statewide averageprecipitation totaled 9.57 inches,a record for any June dating backto 1895. Shamong saw 12.40 inch-es.“The amount of rainfall wasabsolutely unprecedented forJune,” Gsell said. “We’ve hadyears or months with too muchrainfall but not in June. It’s justunexpected.”Farms are faced with two bigissues due to the unprecedentedamount of rainfall.“Crops that are planted alreadyand trying to grow cannot grow
NICK COHEN/The Shamong Sun
Farms in Shamong and throughout the region have struggled with the unseasonably wet weather in June and early July. ‘Our plants alreadyin the ground have gotten too much water and there are some things we cannot plant because of how saturated the ground is,’ Russo’s Farmemployee Joann Gsell said.

properly because we’ve had notenough sun and too much water.“Because of how much rainwe’ve had, the ground is saturat-ed.“Plants are sitting in water, and when that happens, they willeventually die,” Gsell said. The saturation of the fieldspresents another problem forfarms like Russo’s – the ability toplant at all.“We went almost three weekswithout being able to plant corn. With a gap like that, we will be af-fected in the coming months inhow much there will be availableto harvest,” Gsell said. The concern raised by mostfarmers was not having the vol-ume of produce that customersare used to. Many voiced thatlater in the season, when patronsare looking to buy corn or otherseasonal produce, they’ve forgot-ten how rainy June and earlyJuly were because it doesn’t affectthem as it does a farm. The im-pact is felt for the rest of the yearby the rain the region has gottenthis summer.Last week’s hot and dry weath-er, with temperatures in the midto upper 90s, was just what thedoctor ordered for farms still cul-tivating soggy soil.
