You can never go home
By Col. Michael Mounts
Mission Support Group Commander“You can never go home”—I am fairly sure most of us, if not all of us,are familiar with that saying and at least to some extent have experienced it. Irecently experienced that phenomena having returned to the United Statesafter a 6 month deployment to Afghanistan.Almost concurrent with my return, I was selected to become the MissionSupport Group Commander at Westover ARB, in MA. While I love NiagaraARS and Western New York and its wonderful people, I believe this reassignmentis a good thing. I came here nearly 5 years ago fully expecting this to be my final“stop.” I have enjoyed every minute of my time here—well, OK almost everyminute.

Together, we have faced and worked through three large scale deployments and virtuallycountless smaller ones, worked through the BRAC process, built and are building new facilities, renovatedor improved other infrastructure and enhanced the quality of life. Those things happened because of the fantastic people who work with and play on TeamNiagara. The support from the community, the exceptional accomplishments of the 914th and the 107thmade a difference in keeping our base “alive.” I was very pleased and humbled to have been a part of thateffort. In the 6 months I was gone, many, many things changed. Some obvious—like new buildingsand such, others not so—marriages, births, deaths, divorces, promotions, retirements and on and on.Each of those events altered the fabric of the base to some extent, frequently for the better, sometimes notthe case. Not all the changes were a surprise to me. Even 8,000 miles away or so, I would get news aboutthis and that from my wife, friends, co-workers, etc. so I did have some awareness of the “goings on” hereat Niagara. But clearly even after I caught up on the “news” and as warmly and wonderfully as I waswelcomed back, I know it is time for me to go.As great as I am sure it will be to go to Westover and undertake new challenges, meet and knowmany new folks, Niagara will always be a special place for my wife Mary and me. This is a bittersweetmoment for us but we know that the men and women of Team Niagara will continue to serve withdistinction. We shall always be proud to have been a part of this fantastic group of people at Niagara andto have called it “home.”
