The Story of a GirlChapter 1: The Basics This is the story of a girl, my best friend Faith Patterson. She’s 15, and often misunderstood. She considers herself “fun size.” because of her height. She has hazel eyes andweighs only 97 pounds. She has a lot of role models in herlife, and a lot of awesome friends, like me- Sam, and thenher friend MJ, he’s pretty cool, and then there’s her otherfriend Matt, as well as Sarah, and her other friend Sara too. The list goes on and on.Faith has always been a happy go lucky person up until sheentered high school. Faith has been living with a conditioncalled cerebral palsy ever since she was an infant. She has amix of two types of cerebral palsy, one affecting her legs andher muscle tone, as well as tightness in her muscles, resulting in an inability to walk. The other type of cerebralpalsy she has effects her hand eye coordination
.
She hascrutches, but the majority of the time she uses a wheelchairbecause her crutches sometimes pose a danger. Hercondition is also known

as CP.I have a type of CP too. Mine just affects my ability towalk though. My war is a lot easier to win, and surgery hashelped me fight. I use one crutch. Faith doesn’t wantsurgery, she doesn’t like anesthetic. When her mom waspregnant with her, she had appendicitis, and had to have herappendix removed, otherwise she and Faith would have died.Faith’s theory about her disability is that the anesthetic fromher mother’s surgery affected her brain, causing her to beborn disabled.Faith doesn’t have a lot of understanding about

life, and is constantly focusing on her imperfections. Faith is aschoolgirl for life. She wants to get a teaching degree inelementary education when she goes to college. She goes to

church, but her faith in the Lord is questionable. It’s funnyhow her name is Faith, yet her faith in God is questionable.Faith wishes that God will cure her of her disability. She prays, and prays
,
hoping that someday her prayers willbe answered
.
She has the hope, but it’s like her prayers areoften out of desperation. She knows God is there, but shefeels unheard.Faith lives with her grandparents. Her parents are divorced. When Faith was nine or ten years old, her Dad came downwith a type of cancer called Hodgkins Lymphoma, and henearly died. Her parents got divorced because her mother couldn’t dealwith her own personal self esteem issues. Her mom movedout of the house when she was 11. Shortly after her mom’smove, due to his job, Faith’s Dad had to begin travelingaround the U.S.A. every two weeks or so. He is a chef and aKitchen Manger for a restaurant chain. He went fromPittsburgh, to Baltimore, to Philadelphia, and finally afterFaith’s twelfth birthday, her Dad was sent to IL until arestaurant opened in Pittsburgh, one in which he couldassume the same position. It’s been two and a half, almost three years since he’smoved out there. Now, Faith’s Dad has a girlfriend namedAngie, from the way Faith talks about her, she sounds prettyawesome.Faith and I have known each other since preschool, andwe’ve gone to school together all of our lives. The school weattended in our younger years goes from kindergarten to 8
th
grade. When Faith was 11, she was finally able to get anaide. (An adult who follows you around all day… They aresometimes a bother, sometimes they’re cool too.) At first,Faith didn’t really like her aide that much, claiming that shewas always “too friendly.” After awhile, Faith’s aide finallymade a connection with her, and they began to get to knoweach other. Now, they are the best of friends, and are “likeOreo cookies and milk.” Faith tells her aide everything, evenabout her home life, and even sometimes about boys shelikes.

I remember the summer of 8
th
grade. Faith was reallyserious with one of her neighbors. She’s known him sinceshe was seven. She really liked him, but eventually hebecame abusive. When school started, Faith told her aideabout this boy and me as well. Upon finding this out, Faith’saide told her to tell her family, but she wouldn’t. Faith’s aidegave her some motherly advice. Things didn’t seem to begoing well at all for her. This boy had her captivated. Faithconsidered the advice she had received from her aide to be judgmental, and it caused a big argument. Eventually Faithfound the courage to tell her family, but things didn’t endthere between her and her Romeo. In mid-May Faith made a pledge before God that she’dstand pure. With a pure heat and all, but to her that meantkeeping her v-card, and that what it means to me as well, but it means much more than that to God.Faith had a rough 8
th
grade year, she got a lot of homework, but the thing that ate at her the most was leaving the schoolshe practically grew up in; it was like her second home, aswell as mine, and we were crushed when we had to moveon, but we had no choice. On top of that, Faith and I hadshared the same aide, and that was cool, but there was notelling what the future would hold. The week before ourpromotion, Faith and I were both on an emotionalrollercoaster, but Faith was slowly fading away. We had foundout that our aide would no longer be with us beyond middleschool, and that we would be each be assigned an aideupon entering high school. Faith’s neighbor (technically herfirst boyfriend) was at our 8
th
grade commencement. Faithcould not hold back her emotion, and after the ceremoniesand etc
,
Faith had a party at her house; I remember that. Itwas a blast.
