Trust For Kids
In 1979, a group of people got together to assist a family
with a sick child. Soon another family was helped. Trust
for Kids was formally organized in 1980 with a group of
people, a bank account and fundraising. We are here to
assist families with dependent children, under the age
of 19. We help with medical needs, travel to distant ap-
pointments, lodging while away and sometimes help with
costs of long-term prescriptions. We cover Kaslo, Lardeau
Valley and Ainsworth. In the past, we have helped ap-
proximately 60 families.
We have fundraisers and receive donations and would like
to thank everyone who supports this important trust fund.
If you know a family that needs assistance with medical
bills or travel, please contact one of the fve board mem-
bers: Dave Bolland - 250-353-2500, Deb Reimer - 250-

Musicians Prepare
For Glacier Audience
Rehearsals are in full swing in both Kaslo and Nelson,
BC as singers and musicians from across the region pre-
pare for the performance of a lifetime. Later this month,
seventy professional and amateur musicians will play a
command performance before an audience of one a
Glacier. Requiem for a Glacier is a four movement ora-
torio composed by Victoria-based artist Paul Walde.

Clearly the Best
Musicians Prepare contd from pg 19
Te requiem is the most recent and ambitious work by
Walde, whose work explores the interconnectedness be-
tween landscape, identity and technology. Te performance
has been conceived for the glacier alone; there will be no
audience, other than those contributing to the presentation.
Fundraising for the event has also launched with an In-
diegogo campaign. Funds will ofset the costs associated
with staging this event, which is at the forefront of both
art and activism. Later this month a public performance
of the requiem in Nelson will also raise funds.
To bring such a large-scale work to fruition Walde is col-
laborating with a team of roughly 100 people. In addition
to the forty-person choir and the thirty-person orchestra,
there will be a conductor, a soloist, mountaineers, a flm
crew, writers, journalists and photographers in attendance.
Walde and arts curator Kiara Lynchs recent call for musi-
cians and volunteers was met with overwhelming support
by Kootenay residents. Lynch is independently curating this
project with the support of the Langham Cultural Centre in
Kaslo and Oxygen Art Centre in Nelson, where the work
will be exhibited in October 2013, and January 2014, and the
support of the Nelson Civic Teatre.
Located in the Purcell Mountain Range in eastern British
Columbia, the Jumbo Glacial Range or Qatmuk, is a high alti-
tude range of fve glaciers that have been spared some of the
environmental degradation of other glaciers due to its altitude.
However with continued global warming, this geographic-
al advantage will soon be lost and in fact the glaciers are al-
ready in retreat. To compound matters a $450M resort pro-
posal has recently been given fnal provincial governmental
approval. As Professor David Schindler of the University of
Alberta warns, ski lifs and skier traf c on the surface of Jum-
bo Glacier will hasten its melting, and compromise one of the
important headwater sources of the Columbia River system.
Area residents have been vocal in their opposition to the
proposed development of a year-round resort at Jumbo
Glacier. Te local Ktunaxa First Nation have declared
themselves expressly opposed to the development, as
have many environmental groups.
Karen Behn, Stephanie Judy and Jef Faragher have taken
on the role of coordinating choir and musician rehearsals.
Faragher, who is both a cellist and artistic director of the
Symphony of the Kootenays, expects the musicians will
face some new challenges with this performance.
All of the musicians will gather in Nelson for a three-
day workshop during the last week of July under the
direction of Ajtony Csaba, conductor of the University
of Victoria Symphony Orchestra and Central European
Chamber orchestra. A public performance of the requiem
will take place at the Nelson United Church on the even-
ing of Tursday, July 25, at 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm which
will also act as a fundraiser for the project.
For more information, and to make a donation, please
visit www.indiegogo.com and search for Requiem for a
Glacier afer the launch on July 12.

ZEUS
We cant believe this sweet boy has not been adopted yet. Zeus
is almost a year old, a beautiful husky cross, is neutered and vac-
cinated, weighs 70 lbs (and still growing), and eats about 6 cups of
food a day. Zeus is a shy boy, and needs patience and understand-
ing to help him feel comfortable initially. He is fully housetrained,
loves to play fetch, and to sprawl out close to you in hopes of a
petting hand. There are two things that Zeus needs in his forever
home: a securely fenced yard, and another dog to be a companion.
Zeus can be visited at his foster home in Balfour. Call KAAP at 250-
551-1053 or see Zeus online at kaap.ca/adopt/zeus.

Next Exhibition Opening
At Te Kootenay Gallery
Te next exhibition opening at the Kootenay Gallery in
Castlegar on Friday, July 26 , Miscreants- Mischievous and
Defant is an exhibition of work by Denman Island artist
Scot Bullick. Te exhibition includes two-dimensional
pieces created in paint, crayon, pencil and three dimen-
sional pieces carved in stone, cast in bronze and even felted
in wool. But always relating to a common theme: monsters.
Bullicks miscreants, or monsters, whether modeled and
cast, carved, or created from found or discarded materials,
move between villainous and friendly, and ofen times are
misunderstood. As Curator, Helen Sebelius states, Bullick
presents a view into a world where social, political and
familial tales are retold with varying degrees of despair,
criticism and humour. Tese are not necessarily all scary
monsters as some are of eat and project a sense of play. Te
viewer is challenged to defy the monsters that surround us
everyday or maybe even the monster hidden with ourselves.
Tis powerful exhibition will be showing at the Koote-
nay Gallery until Saturday, September 14. Te artist and
curator will be in attendance at the opening reception on
July 26 at 7 pm. For the duration of this exhibition the
Gallery gif shop will be expanded to include the smaller
gallery space providing an opportunity to view even more
of the wonderful work created by local artists and crafs-
people. Now open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to
5pm, the Gallery is located at 120 Heritage Way, Castlegar
(across from the airport, just past the Doukhobor Dis-
covery Centre). Visit us on facebook or on our website at

Renovations To Kaslo Health Centre
Interior Health is advising Kaslo and area residents
that renovations to the emergency department entrance
at Victorian Community Health Centre will start Friday,
July 19. As a result, anyone needing to access the emer-
gency department or residential care wing should do so
through the ambulance entrance from the main parking
lot (A Avenue). Signage will also be in place to direct
people to the appropriate entrance.
Access to the downstairs primary care area will not
change.
Renovations to the entrance will include a new entrance
for the emergency department with a modern door sys-
tem, entry space and security features. Tis work is ex-
pected to be completed in the fall.
Tese improvements are made possible through a
$500,000 donation from the estate of long-time resident
Mabel Manning.
Additional improvements also moving forward through
this donation include installation of a secure door to the
emergency trauma bay that will improve privacy and sec-
urity for patients, physicians and staf; renovations to the
tub room, including a brand new tub and shower, to meet
special bathing needs for residential care and community
clients, and the conversion of an existing bathing room
to a new hair salon for residential care clients. A new
nurse call system that allows for better communications
between staf in all areas of the health centre has already
been installed and is working well. Victorian Community
Health Centre of Kaslo Ladies Auxiliary also contributed
$30,000 to the nurse call system.

OBOK Vote Deadline Looms!
Te popular Kootenay-wide book club One Book, One Koo-
tenay has kept regional readers busy trying to decide which of
the three shortlisted books should get the nod. Each year, book
lovers read, discuss, and vote on the book they think all Koo-
tenay folk should read. Te deadline for voting for the 2013
One Book, One Kootenay selection is Friday, August 2.
Tis years shortlist is comprised of Never Going Back, by
Antonia Banyard; Confned Space, by Deryn Collier; and Te
Dolphins Tooth: a Decade in Search of Adventure, by Bruce
Kirkby. Since May, these Kootenay authors have been read-
ing in libraries across the region, either in person or virtually
through flm. With several days lef to read and vote, the Koo-
tenay Library Federation that hosts OBOK is urging people
to pick up copies of the books at their local libraries, and vote.
Tey are all good reads: Colliers mystery Confned
Space (Simon & Schuster) introduces small-town coroner
Bern Fortin as he investigates a murder in a brewery; Te
Dolphins Tooth: a Decade in Search of Adventure (Mc-
Clelland & Stewart) follows Kirkby through 15 years of
high adventure in some of the worlds edgier places; Ban-
yards novel Never Going Back (Tistledown Press) brings
together a group of high school friends afer 10 years of
separation as they converge for a friends memorial.
Te 2013 selected OBOK author is celebrated in a tour
of select Kootenay libraries in the fall. Its great to be
able to celebrate the talented writers of the Kootenay in
this way, says Kootenay Library Federation director Jo-
anne Richards. With One Book, One Kootenay, every-
body wins. Tis is the ffh anniversary of OBOK, a re-
gion-wide book club supported by public libraries in the
East and West Kootenay, and the Columbia Basin Trust.
www.obok.ca is the place to fnd information about the
books and interviews with the authors, follow the results
of the vote, and fnd out where to catch the selected author
reading at a library near you.

Mysterious
Moose
Moved to
Safer Pastures
Sometime last
week a moose ap-
peared on the Moyie
Beach in Kaslo. Tere
was something amiss
about this moose...it
was constructed en-
tirely of drifwood!
At frst the origins
of the unresponsive
ungulate were a bit of
a moostery. In time
it was revealed that
the spontaneous sculptor was Tuan Pham, cousin of local
pharmacist Ward Taylor, visiting from Winnipeg.
Tourists and locals alike were intrigued by the life size
likeness of Bullwinkle-on-the-Beach, but alas, without a
plan in place to safeguard the sculpture from tides, dogs and
would be bonfre makers, or the citizenry bent on climbing
and playing on it, a new home had to be found...and quickly.
Tanks to Kaslo residents historical willingness to pre-
serve the antique, the cool and the funky (Langham Ho-
tel, SS Moyie, etc.) a temporary home was quickly found,
and the Drifwood Moose (any ideas for a name?) can
now be found grazing outside the Live Art Shop on the
west end of Front Street. Could this spawn an annual
drifwood sculpture competition in Kaslo? Stay tuned...
