OPPORTUNITY FOR POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP THE SOUTHERN AFRICAN CENTER FOR INFECTIOUS DISEASE SURVEILLANCE (SACIDS), SOKOINE UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE (SUA), MOROGORO, TANZANIA SACIDS is a One Health VIRTUAL CENTRE linking 5 southern African countries, and their academic and research institutions, involved with infectious diseases of humans, animals and ecosystems in smart partnership with both centres of scientific excellence in industrialised countries and international research centres. Its headquarters is located at the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), in Morogoro, Tanzania. Thanks to financial support from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada, SACIDS has started an eco-health driven project entitled: Integrated Human and Animal Disease Control for Tanzanian Pastoralists Facing Settlement. We seek to appoint, as soon as possible, a young PhD holder as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for a period of up to 4 years to undertake guided research under the mentorship of a panel of Tanzanian and UK specialists. His/her primary research focus will be on the following two objectives, but he/she will be expected to contribute to other project objectives: i. To identify the effects of social, economic and environmental transformations on risks and vulnerabilities to infectious diseases that affect food security among pastoralists in at least two Tanzanian health districts in different agro-ecosystems (dry versus forest savannahs). To develop and test multi-sectorial community-based interventions to detect and control high-burden infectious diseases identified under the first objective, and assess their implications on food security.

The successful candidate is expected to have the following profile: Be a PhD holder for less than 5 years in Sociology/Medical Sociology/Anthropology. The candidate should have an interest in the relationship between health, economic activity and social life. Be not more than 40 years old Have expertise in statistical modeling Have experience with participatory approaches and an interest in working with pastoral communities and be able to spend extended periods in Ngorongoro District.

Experience in health economics will be an added advantage Experience with vulnerability and/or impact analyses with a focus on gender and/or environmental factors will also be an advantage Should be fluent in both English and Kiswahili Should have a good track record of publications Would be required to publish in high impact journals, as well as publish or contribute to publications for the non-specialist audience/readership Would be required to travel extensively within the district, attend scientific meetings, and workshops within and outside the country

This postdoctoral research fellowship will be registered at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) under the primary leadership of Professors James Mlangwa and Esron Karimuribo. Secondary mentorship will be by Professor Angwara Kiwara of Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, Dr. Leonard Mboera of the Tanzania National Institute for Medical Research, plus Professors Richard Kock and Jonathan Rushton of the Royal Veterinary College, London. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with local and national authorities in the public and animal health sectors as well as in those in the natural and community development sectors. He/she will also be expected to collaborate closely with other SACIDS sponsored research apprentices and to play an active part in the activities of SACIDS Communities of Practice. This is a full time research training position. Candidates who are employed will need to produce evidence of employer release that will enable the candidate, if selected, to devote at least 80% of their work period to research on this project.
