Wool is the fiber derived from the hair of animals of the Caprinae family, principallySheep, but the hair of certain species of other mammals such as goats, llamas andrabbits may also be called wool.
Wool has two qualities that distinguish itfrom hair or fur: it has scales which overlaplike shingles on a roof and it is crimped; insome fleeces the wool fibers have morethan 20 bends per inch.
In the thirteenth century, the wool trade was theeconomic engine of the Low Countries and of CentralItaly; by the end of the following century Italypredominated.
Due to decreasing demand with increased use of synthetic fibers, wool production is much less than whatit was in the past.
The collapse in the price of wool began in late 1966 witha 40% drop; with occasional interruptions, the price hastended down.
