THURMAN STATION WILDERNESS HERITAGE CORRIDOR SHOWCASE, JULY 27, 11 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Three Towns, One Goal. Thurman Station - We struggled to find just the right name for the Showcase, says Thurman Station Association president Perky Granger. We wanted it to both describe the event and also pinpoint our location in this corridor so rich in traditions of trains, trade and tourism. The event (its name often abbreviated as, Thurman Station Showcase) will present a cast of approximately 40 folksmostly from Warrensburg, Stony Creek and Thurmanrepresenting businesses, arts and organizations whose goods and services reflect the heritage of the area and illustrate the rich creativity of the three-town region surrounding the station. Geared for visitors of all ages, some arriving by train and others by car, the Showcase will be held at Thurman Station, 1883 Stony Creek Road, Thurman. Guests will find sales and samples of local foods, such as naturally produced maple goods, meats and nationally-acclaimed cheeses; restaurant and B&B specialties to tempt the palate; and artistic creationssuch as paintings, jewelry, rustic wares, garden accessories and hand-spun yarn to please the eye. Many exhibitors plan demonstrations, some interactive, such as water dowsing , craft projects and Warren County Soil and Waters model river complete with flowing water, which shows how rivers evolve and change, especially when man meddles. The Adirondack Museum will exhibit information about the stamps once used to identify owners of logs sent downriver, and will host a stamping activity; Milda Burns of North River will tell of the drives, once supervised by her father. Nancy Kimball, wildlife rehabilitator, will bring birds of prey and tell about their habits and role in the regional wildlife scene. Local history will be represented by Warren County Historical Society, Warrensburgh Museum of Local History and the John Thurman Historical Society all with publications and photos, including the Warren County Bicentennial traveling exhibits for each of the three towns. Saratoga & North Creek Railway will host a table, as will First Wilderness Heritage Corridor. While visitors browse the vending areas at the Station and across the road at Adirondack Ambiance, Dan Berggren and Ed Lowman will perform regional folk music (11 3), and actor Phil Jessen of Hartford, well-known in our area for his portrayals of Abraham Lincoln, will present a monologue while reenacting early Thurman resident Stephen Griffing, on whose 1800s farm the Showcase will be held (12:30). Kate Sullivan of Froggy 101.7 will broadcast live from the Showcase from 11 to 1. Raffle tickets will be available for three items: a rustic gift basket stuffed with local products and certificates, valued at over $200; an all-cotton quilt made by Avis Russell; and the post and beam frame for a garden shed, handcrafted by Andy LeBlanc of Barn Works, all to benefit Thurman Station Association. Both Russell and LeBlanc will be plying their craft at the Showcase, and other vendors will have giveaways, samples and special discounts for visitors. All youth have the opportunity to earn ribbons. In addition, youth 5 to 19 years of age have the opportunity to earn cash premium awards from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets for their work. Exhibit categories range from creative arts, photography, clothing and textile projects, to pets, food, natural resources, vegetable gardening, horticulture, and mechanical sciences. All projects are subject to the rules for specific departments and fair books are currently available free of charge at the Cornell University Cooperative Extension office during office hours of 8:30AM to 4:30PM Monday through Thursday. Judging Day for the exhibits is scheduled for Friday, August 9th from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the fairgrounds on Schroon River Road in Warrensburg. The youth and their exhibits are judged based on the capability of the youth, and not by comparing one youth and/or exhibit against another (referred to as the Danish system; this allows for more than one placement at each level). Some exhibits will be selected to go to the New York State Fair in Syracuse. The judging experience helps youth gain appreciation of workmanship and helps improve their skills, techniques, and confidence. The exhibits must be displayed for public viewing on Saturday, August 10th from 9:00AM to 4:00PM at the fairgrounds. Exhibit entries are due to the CCE office by July 15th. For more information on how to exhibit at the Youth Fair please contact the Cornell Cooperative Extension Education Center in Warrensburg (623-3291 or 668-4881) or visit Extensions web site at: http://www.cce.cornell.edu/ warren THE CCC CONTINUES TO REACH FOR THE STARS. The Salem Courthouse Community Centers newest club, the Salem Astronomers, is in its second year and continues to grow in popularity. Under the direction of Bill Frederick, the club has attracted much interest and has a growing membership. The club meets at the CCC at 7 pm on the third Wednesday of each month with the objective of sharing a common interest in astronomy and learning more about the cosmos. Bill is a hands-on club director emailing members daily with updates so they can navigate their way through the night skies. Guest speakers of interest are invited regularly, and Bill has offered members the opportunity to observe the night sky using the powerful telescope at his home. New members are always welcome, and Bill invites anyone to email his recently changed address directly at wfrederi@wildblue.net for additional information.

Did You Know?

What do you do with an abandoned railway station? Demolish it? What could it possibly be good for? Well, Bob Kellogg, President of Warren Tire was looking for a location that could service Whitehall, Ticonderoga, Fair Haven, Comstock, North Granville, Hampton, Granville, Poultney, Fort Ann and other nearby areas. When a Realtor suggested the abandoned railway station in Whitehall, Bob was concerned about the soundness of the building. So, he had it thoroughly inspected and when it was deemed safe, he converted it to a 4 bay tire sales and service center, which is scheduled to open August 1, 2013. This makes the 16th Warren Tire Service Center in the area. The first center was started by Bobs father, Wayne Kellogg, at 92 Warren Street in Glens Falls in 1983. The second center was opened in Clifton Park, a move that helped launch the company into a major competitor in upstate New York. As mentioned above, Bob serves as President of the company, Wayne is CEO, Bobs sister, Denise Potter, is Vice President and Don Villa is General Manager. Together they have grown the company to the 16 stores, with tire sales in excess of 60,000 units annually. They started out with Goodyear and added many other brands, including: Michelin, Dunlop, BF Goodrich, Kelly, Continental, General, Uniroyal, Firestone, Bridgestone, Perelli, Yokohama and Nokian. Their store in Whitehall will be handling all those brands for all kinds of vehicles, such as trucks, cars, tractors, ATVs and more! The family is extremely proud of their tire stores, and they are equally proud of their service centers which accompany each store. Their service centers provide full service for all makes and models of vehicles. So, the Whitehall service center will be happy to do oil changes, alignments, adjust and replace brakes, do NY inspections, provide mufflers, do full diagnostic tests, figure out that pesky check engine light, and provide just about every other repair or accessory you may need or want. When the Whitehall service center opens on August 1 you are cordially invited to stop in and see the marvelous job Warren Tire has done converting and saving the old railway station. The tire store will be stocked with your favorite tires and the 4 bays will be ready to provide the excellent service Warren Tire is known to provide.

BRUNSWICK HISTORICAL SOCIETY OPEN Wednesdays 1 3 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. 3 p.m. Located in the historic Garfield School, 605 Brunswick Road, Troy and public is welcome. We have an on-site extensive genealogy library available. For information call 279-4024 or view us at http://www.bhs-ny.org NEW EXHIBIT- new exhibition opened recently at the Washington County Historical Society: Stocking the General Stores in Washington County, New York, 1900 to 1950. Changes in transportation are documented by period photographs and artifacts. Goods and services in the stores are discussed by local writers who also remembered or heard about railway and canal experiences. Shipments made their way up the Hudson, through the Champlain Canal and north to Lake Champlain or when heading south to Albany, Troy or New York City. Containers had improved to accommodate larger numbers of goods and more efficient ways to dispense foods in the stores. Options in 1900 now included wooden boxes, cloth bags, crates, barrels, kegs, tin bins, cans and, for homeuse, scuttles and baskets. There was no light-weight cardboard, no corrugated cardboard boxes, few brown paper bags, to say nothing of plastic! Conveyances varied according to size, weight, and distance which commodities had to travel. Locally, some general stores would take orders and deliver in a day or two. A wagon or cart with horse could be rented by an individual or small business from a livery for local travel. Within the county, stagecoaches could carry travelers and their baggage, smaller parcels, and some mail. By using both the canal and, later, the railroad, general stores provided necessary and desirable goods closer to home. Stocking the General Stores is open to the public at no charge on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. through November. It is in the Heritage Research Center at the Washington County Historical Society, 167 Broadway, Fort Edward, New York. For further information call 518-747-9108 or email wchs@wchs-ny.org.

MUSIC FROM SALEM CONCERT AT HUBBARD HALL: FOUR HANDS, LUMINOUS WORKS Saturday, August 3 at 8 pm Hubbard Hall will present Music from Salems third summer season concert Four Hands, Luminous Works, titled for part of the program that involves two pianists on one piano. Music for piano four-hands is as much fun to watch as it is to listen to - the closeness of two players navigating their hand crossings and sharing their musical impulses can be as beautiful as a choreographed pas de deux. This concert offers a fascinating group of transcriptions by celebrated composers for piano duet, as well as Bach organ preludes transcribed for cello and piano by Kodaly. The program also features a meltingly melodious Dumka by Rebecca Clarke and Chaussons romantic piano quartet. Performing this summer for the first time with MfS is violinist Lydia Forbes, of the Da Ponte string quartet, and acclaimed pianist Alissa Leiser, along with Marc Ryser, a director of Music by the Sea. Wonderful cellist Scott Kluksdahl returns, as does artistic director and violist Lila Brown. The August 3 concert will take place at 8:00pm at historic Hubbard Hall in Cambridge, NY. Admission is pay what you can, so everyone can attend! ($20 suggested) For advance tickets: www.hubbardhall.org or 518-677-2495.

Residents of Washington County and the surrounding area should keep their eyes open for a wayward flock of pink flamingoes that just might show up on a front lawn in your neighborhood! The flamingoes are on the move to benefit the Haynes House of Hope, a comfort care home for the terminally ill in Granville. If you wake up to find the flock resting in front of your house, the only way to make them leave is to make a $25 donation to Haynes House. For this donation, you get to decide where the flock will land next. Its all in good fun and for a good cause. To arrange for a flocking, call Haynes House at 518-642-8155. The flock is willing to travel throughout the area, so lawns far and wide can be visited by the fabulous flamingoes. The Haynes House of Hope, located at 7187 State Route 140 in Granville, serves the terminally ill and their families. The residents stay and care are provided free of charge. Since Haynes House receives no funding from insurance or government agencies, it is totally dependent on fundraising events, donations, grants, and the generosity of the community to fulfill its mission. More information is available at www.thehayneshouseofhope.com or by calling 518-642-8155. JOIN US FOR AL FRESCO! The Warren County Historical Society is searching for individuals who would like to participate and are specifically interest in talking with individuals who have some knowledge in three specific areas: World War II Memories: We are looking for individuals who have memories of The Home Front during WWII (1941-45). Do you remember Pearl Harbor, D-Day, the election of 1944, and FDRs death? Also do you remember V-E Day and V-J Day, rationing, victory gardens, movies, songs, etc.? Fairs in Warren County: We are interested in talking with individuals who remember the various County Fairs in Warrensburg and perhaps other locations through the 1960s. Churches: We are looking for individuals who have an interest in the importance of churches in the development of a community. It would be especially interesting to learn why a particular congregation formed in a particular community, and what influence the people of the church had on the community, and the role of the church in creating a gathering place for people to meet for social events. If you are interested in participating in these interviews, you can call the Warren County Historical Society before August 10th (518-743-0734) to make arrangements to be interviewed.

Im a little shy at first but once I get to know you, Im friendly and mellow. I also have a bit of an independent streak! I would be fine with other cats or children, but Im not too sure about dogs. If I sound like the girl for you, please come and visit me and give me my forever home! Hi Im Ashley and Im a pretty and petite little girl. I can be a little shy until I get to know you. Once Im comfortable with you though, I love attention and to be petted. I have a bit of an independent streak in me so Id be most happy in a quiet home that allows me to be an indoor/outdoor kitty. Since I came to Second Chance after living on a farm, that might be just what I need again. So if you are looking for a kitty to complete your life and I sound perfect for you, please come by and meet me! Hi my name is Rocky! I am a 6 month old American Shelter Dog. I came to Second Chance because I was too much for my previous guardian to handle. I love attention and to play with all sorts of toys! I would really like a home where I can have someone to run around and play with and I love the water!! I can go to a home with children 6 years or older; cats and dogs upon introduction. If I sound like the guy for you, please come see me at SCAC!! Hi my name is George! Im a very friendly and affectionate two-year-old Coonhound. I came to Second Chance Animal Center from another shelter that was too full. I long for a family who will spend time with me taking me for long walks and hikes! Once we are done, Id love to snuggle up with you on the couch at the end of the day. I would prefer a home with a fenced in yard when Im not on my walks. I can share my home with kids 8 years old and older. I can be a little picky about four-legged companions, so I will want to be your one and only. As a dog that has lived outside my entire life, my new family will need a little patience while I learn to live inside, but I promise Im worth it. Im a good boy with a lot of love to give and I deserve a chance to experience life with someone who will love me back.

POULTNEY CEMETERY ASSOCIATION NEWS. At recent special meeting of the association lot owners and trustees several matters of business were discussed. Two of the several topics the trustees reviewed include property roadways repair work needed and the water pipe system. Research is beginning for information about a solar operated system to collect, store and recycle rain water for lot owners use for watering plants, etc. These topics were tabled until the next meeting. The association trustees wish plot owners and their families/ descendants and the public to know that sporadically there is need of a strong individual to assist as digger. A contractual laborer opportunity, the person will assist our regular diggers with preparation of the two foot by two foot shovel dug cremation lots for burials. Additionally, occasional assistance is needed to dig and set lot cornerstone markers, which are set in place after lots are purchased. This is occasional seasonal work when the present diggers have schedule conflicts or illness. Compensation is available and the trustee / sexton in charge will provide training. (The trustees also wish the public to know that lots in the cremation section of the property are available for purchase.) Questions should be directed to the association. Does anyone have photo of the old Gray Foundry fountain that used to be on our property up the road from the vault where the floral garden now is? We do not and the Historical Society also does not. We would appreciate historic photos of our property if anyone has some they may share. Lot owners are reminded that due to the increased cost in the upkeep of the cemetery due to decorations, bushes, trees, pictures on stands, etc. the Association Trustees request that all decorations not complying with the Association Regulations be removed promptly. Kindly do not deposit house-hold, personal or other refuse in the trash bins. Dispose of it properly from your home methods. The said Regulations are duly posted on signage within the cemetery, on the Associations website and print copy is also available from any trustees / sextons. A Special Meeting of the Lot Owners and Trustees is scheduled for Tuesday, August 13th at 6:30 p.m. It will be held at the Young At Heart Senior Center site, Furnace Street (Route 30), Poultney. Association meetings, which are warned and posted not less than 10 business days prior to meetings, are found at: the U.S. Post Offices in Poultney and East Poultney and Poultney Town Hall. They are also warned on the Associations Facebook website. The Poultney Cemetery Association property on Beaman Street in Poultney, Vermont is currently open to lot owners, their families and friends from dawn to dusk. The property is not a public park. Kindly observe quiet when funeral services are being conducted. Association contact means include: poultneycemeteryassociation@yahoo.com as well as through Facebook and by US postal mail to: P.O. Box 63, Poultney, VT 05764-0063. 2013 Trustees / Sextons include: Karen M. Atwood, Patricia H. Davenport, Janice B. Edwards, Jason Cook, Lynn D. McGann, Joan H. Bixby, William Peck, Dale W. Hughes.
