General Summary
 This thesis detailed the transformation of the UST fine arts school fromthe 1935 when it was first launched, as a minuscule academic unit under thethen College of Engineering, until its elevation into a college in 2000. In orderto achieve this objective, it first inquired into the rationale for the school’slaunching then identified the people responsible for its conceptualization,implementation, and administration. Following that, it looked into theevolution of the school’s organizational structure and curricula. The growth of its student body, faculty and alumni was also investigated. And finally, itidentified the school’s contributions to the achievement of University’s goalsand in the development of Philippine visual arts.This is an institutional history so the author employed newinstitutionalism as the theoretical framework in his analyses. The sociologicalinstitutionalism approach was applied in particular because it provided a way toexplain the School’s relationship with its institutional environment, discussedthe effects of this environment’s social expectations on the institution, anddemonstrated how these expectations were reflected in the institution’s
organizational characteristics. It also explained why the Institution ended upadopting organizational structures and culture of the same institutions in theirfield even though they evolved in different ways.In his conclusions, the writer was guided by the results of thecompilation and evaluation of information obtained from pertinent readingreferences mainly printed materials, such as, books, manuals, announcements,periodicals, and souvenir programs. Observations of the current situation andactivities in the institution and firsthand investigation of college records werealso undertaken. This thesis also analyzed the data as regards the institution’sadministration, faculty, curriculum, students, and alumni. All the data gatheredwere used with as much objectivity as possible.
Summary of Findings
 At this point the writer reports the findings from the analysis of data andmaterials compiled for this thesis that would explain the institution’stransformation from 1935 to 2000. They are as follows:1.
The UST School of Fine Arts was established in 1935because increasing demand for professionals trained in the field of designing and remodeling. This demand resulted from the rise in theconstruction of new business buildings and remodeling of old ones that
was brought about by the economic prosperity obtaining in thePhilippines during the early part of the 1930’s. Another reason was therequirements for teachers to teach art appreciation in the public schoolin compliance with the directive of the Director of the Bureau of PublicSchools. For Victorio Edades and his Thirteen Moderns, the creation of the school was seen as an opportunity to bridge the fifty-year gapbetween Philippine art and the rest of the world in order to break itsstagnation. For the Dominicans the need was to train Catholic artistswith the mission to eradicate materialism in arts that was pervasiveduring that time.The School had to go through different stages of developmentuntil its transformation to CFAD. These stages were: (1) launching as adepartment under the Faculty of Engineering (1935-1938), (2)integration as a department into the School of Architecture and Fine Arts(1938-1946), (3) assimilation into the College of Architecture and Fine Arts from (1946-2000), and finally, (5) attainment of autonomous andindependent college status as the College of Fine Arts and Design in2000.
