News Update: Court Trial on Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Daw Aung San Suu KyiLocation: Special Court at Insein Prison, Rangoon, BurmaDate: May 18, 2009Court Time: 09:30 (Local Time)Lawyers of Burma’s democratic leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Daw Aung San SuuKyi submitted the judges a request of opening the court for the public to hear the courtprocess, but the judges rejected for security reason. Only four lawyers for Daw Aung SanSuu Kyi and her two helpers; one lawyer and one interpreter for Mr. John W. Yettaw, andsome diplomats from the American Embassy in Rangoon were allowed to be present at thespecial court set up at Insein prison of Rangoon, Burma.
09:30 (Local Time)—Four lawyers, including U Kyi Win, U Hla Myo Myint, U Nyan Win andDaw Khin Htay Kywe, were allowed to be as defendant lawyers for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi andher two helpers. Lawyer Daw Khin Htay Kywe defended on behalf of Daw Khin Khin Win.Police Lt. Colonel Zaw Min Aung brought charges on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to the court. Heaccused her of breaching Section 22 of the State Protection Law by hosting John W. Yettaw inher house overnight. Four plaintiff lawyers from the government also present at the court.After that, U Kyi Win, lawyer of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, defended the police officer’saccusations at the court. U Kyi Win also asked the police officer about his accusations, but theofficer could not properly respond to the lawyer’s questions. (Detailed accounts of theirquestions and answers remain unknown.)U Kyi Win submitted to the judges a request of opening the court for the public to hear the courtprocess, but the judges rejected it for security reason.U Kyi Win hoped that the judges would give the lawyers the freedom to defend at the court. Thecourt hearing on the case of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her two helpers ended at 12 a.m.12: 00 (Local Time)—The court started hearing the case of Mr. John W. Yettaw, an Americannational, who sneaked into the compound of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and stayed there overnight.
