Revived mystery series proves truly‘Unforgettable’ for CBS
By Jay Bobbin © Zap2it
Poppy Montgomery is grateful that enoughpeople didn’t forget her latest series. When CBS’ 2011-12 schedule was an-nounced, one of the big surprises was that“Unforgettable” wasn’t on it. In its freshmanseason, the mystery series about a NewYork police detective with heightened recallaveraged more than 12 million viewers perweek ... an audience most shows don’t comeclose to drawing these days. Two years later, though, “Unforgettable” lives again: It returnsto CBS with new episodes Sunday, July 28.Soon after the CBS cancellation. Lifetimeand TNT were mentioned as networks “Un-forgettable” might be shopped to. In the end, though, CBS made the very rare decision toretract the pink slip and continue the show.“Nothing surprises me anymore,” starPoppy Montgomery says with a laugh aboutresuming the central role of Carrie Wells.“Television has become extraordinarily com-petitive, so when shows get canceled, Ialmost understand. There’s just so much outthere to choose from.“I trusted what CBS was doing, both whenthey decided not to pick up the show andthen when they decided to bring it back. I’m just along for the ride. And I had a baby inbetween, so it worked out great for me!”With that said, Montgomery adds she’spleased “to be back with this revamp. Thegreat thing about doing a summer show isthat you get to have more fun. We were alittle heavier in tone in Season 1, and we’rekind of brightening things up. I actually getto show my teeth and smile every now andthen! Carrie’s not quite as tortured this time, and when they told me about the new direc-tion for the show, I got so excited.”Fans who carry over from Season 1 of “Un-forgettable” — in which Carrie was hauntedby her sister’s murder — will be able to makethe transition easily, Montgomery promises, thanks to what she terms “a watershed mo-ment” early in the new stories. “She decidesto move forward in a positive way and also togo to Manhattan.” Going with her is Al Burns,Carrie’s professional partner and ex-boy-friend, played again by Dylan Walsh. Also back for the new round is creatorand executive producer Ed Redlich, whopreviously worked with Montgomery on herpreceding CBS show, “Without a Trace.”“You rarely get a second chance,” heacknowledges, “and it’s kind of like startingthe show all over again. We have the sameproduction designer and director of photog-raphy, and a lot of the same directors areback, but a lot of the crew is new. Plus, webuilt an entirely new set, and we have newcast members, so it feels like the first timeeven though it’s the second time.”A huge benefit in coming back so muchlater, Redlich reasons, is that “you really geta chance to say, ‘What did we do well? Whatdid we do not so well? And what can weimprove upon?’ One of the opportunities we have is totake the characters out of Queens and bring them intothe city. We started to find that Carrie’s gift of memorywas almost too big for the simple cases we gave her,and we wanted her to have more opportunity to usethat in interesting ways.”Another change is the addition of Dallas Roberts(“The Walking Dead”) as Carrie and Al’s new boss inthe NYPD Major Cases unit. “The first season, we triedto avoid having that character who sometimes can bea bit of a cliche, the sort of ‘TV boss,’ ” says Redlich,“but Dallas is an interesting actor who does interestingstuff, and it gives us a whole new dynamic.”Tawny Cypress and James Liao also are new castmembers as fellow detectives. Jane Curtin is the onlyother major cast member to have survived Season 1,returning as New York’s chief medical examiner.Actress Marilu Henner (“Taxi”) remains a consultanton “Unforgettable,” primarily because she has hyper-thymesia, the memory condition experienced by theshow’s heroine.“I don’t get to see her nearly as much as I’d liketo,” Montgomery reflects, “but she’s always available, should I need any help or have any questions, and she’sa delight. She guest starred on the show the first sea-son, and I’d love to see her do it again. She’s great.”Thirteen episodes make up the second season of“Unforgettable,” but not all of them are slated to airthis summer. The Australian-born Montgomery hopesthe show’s return will fare well enough for those to bescheduled by CBS before long ... along with additionalepisodes yet to be ordered.“It’s very familiar and brand-new at the same time,”she says, “and that’s a great creative space to bein. You trust the people you’re working with, but youalso have the excitement of starting all over again. That makes for a really good energy. And just beingin Manhattan, there’s nowhere else like it in the worldto film in.”
