Unit A Chapter 1 Cells (August/September) Resources Mr. Coley -Have students listen to the Mr. Coley podcast as an overview: http://www.mrcoley.com/studycast/StudyCast02.mp3 Brainpop Videos Cells: http://www.brainpop.com/science/cellularlifeandgenetics/cells/ Cellular Respiration: http://www.brainpop.com/science/cellularlifeandgenetics/cellularrespiration/ Cell Structure: http://www.brainpop.com/science/cellularlifeandgenetics/cellstructures/ Bill Nye The Science Guy- Cells You Tube Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6N82No4Nz8 My Background -All LIVING things are made of one or more cells Cells are so tiny! It would take a layer of about 10,000 human cells to cover the head of a pin! -The CELL is the SMALLEST unit of a living organism -All living things have the same basic needs: 1.obtaining energy 2. growing 3. reproducing -Plant and animal cells have SIMILAR structures called organelles -Cells need energy NOM NOM NOM NOM! So that they can carry out movement, cell division, making proteins, and transporting materials. -Cellular Respiration- cells use glucose and oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water. This gives cells ENERGY called ATP

-Specialized cells combine to form tissue-tissues combine to form organs- organs work together to form systems- and systems for organisms

How are your rooms at home like organelles in a cell? Each room is used for different things just like each organelle has a special function When I inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide how is this evidence that cells are working to provide energy? Cells release carbon dioxide in the process of respiration. Pick up a book and place it back where it was. Did you use cells, tissues, organs, or organ systems to perform that task? You used ALL of them!!! Energy from cells, muscle tissue forming muscle organs, and a muscular system to coordinate movement. Fill in interactive science notebook essentials: (essential questions, what I know, interest walk through chapter, vocab knowledge, vocab foldable, analyze one specific word etc.) Lesson 1 What are the parts of the cell? The molds are in Lakeshore cell tub. Materials List: salt and flour dough masking tape toothpicks cardboard cut in to squares 6in by 6in non stick cooking spray paintbrushes (or maybe markers would work) Lesson 2: How do cells make and use energy? -All living organisms need ENERGY to carry out the functions of life: movement, making proteins, transporting materials, and cell division. -Most important SOURCE of ENERGY is GLUCOSE! -Plants get glucose through photosynthesis and animals get glucose from eating food. -ALL ORGANISMS break down SUGAR -In order to get energy WASTE will be produced carbon dioxide and water -Diffusion and osmosis are types of PASSIVE transport that move materials in and out of the cell. -Not all organisms need the same amount of energy. Science Notebook: -Plant vs animal cellular respiration model (print out) Lab Possibilities: -Yeast Feast (in text book) Materials List 8 plastic baggies sugar

Roots, stems, and leaves help move materials. (root pressure, cohesion, adhesion, and transpiration) -poor NONVASCULAR plants they do not have this tissue. Mosses is an example -TRANSPIRATION- driving force of WATER through a plant. Loss of WATER of plant through LEAVES. When that water LEAVES it produces a PULL that acts through the xylem all the way to the roots.

-PLANT LEAVES! Plants exchange gases with the environment through openings on the underside of the leaf called STOMATA -Did you know that STOMATA OPEN and CLOSE in response to changes in the environment such as dry spells and changes between day and night. -How do water lilies work? Because they float on water the stomata are located on top -Can photosynthesis occur if the STOMATA are CLOSED? NO stomata let in carbon dioxide for the process. -OXYGEN and CARBON DIOXIDE cycle through the environment. If there were NO CYCLES they would build up and run out. -Would Redwoods be able to live in a different environment? No Lesson 1 How do plants produce food? -MULTICELLULAR organism have specialized structures to transport materials to CELLS and waste products AWAY from CELLS. Hello CIRCULATORY and RESPIRATORY System -DIGESTIVE SYSTEM provides nutrients to the body. Food passes in STEPS from the MOUTH to the COLON. -KIDNEY REMOVES WASTE from the BLOOD and CONVERTS it to URINE to go bye bye from the body! -PRIMARY FUNCTION: Circulatory and Respiratory- to provide oxygen to cells and to remove waste from cells Digestive System- break food don in to small pieces to be used by individual cells Excretory System- Remove waste from the body and to maintain water balance.

Lesson 1 What are the respiratory and circulatory systems? -Wow respiratory system you bring oxygen in to the body and then is the mailman and delivers it to the circulatory system. -Oxygen in the BLOOD is DELIVERED to the CELLS -BLOOD takes CARBON DIOXIDE from each CELL and takes it back to the lungs where it is REMOVED from the body -These systems work together -Respiratory System is all about the gas exchange! -oxygen enters mouth-flows through the trachea-into bronchi-then ends up in alveoli of lungs -The Circulatory System is an ORGAN that carries oxygen and nutrients to ALL cells of the BODY! -Heart pumps blood, arteries carry oxygen rich blood away from the heart, veins carry oxygen poor blood back to heart. There is so much water on Earth but only 3% is fresh. -2/3 of that is FROZEN into polar ice so only 1% is available for use. -YOU NEED to know the origin of water in your community. Why are desalination plants so important and why do we need to keep our groundwater pollution free! -Reservoirs-collect and store water. You get a reservoir by putting a dam across the river. -Aqueducts CARRY the water and and move it where it needs to be. -Show a picture of mars. What is the first thing you notice about this planet that is different from Earth? It isnt blue!

-Have you ever seen water running down your street after a rainstorm. Where does it all go? Soaks in ground and travels to rivers ann other bodies of fresh water. -If you were going camping in the dessert you could take water with you What if you lived in the dessert? How would you get water? Aqueducts or wells. Lesson 1 Where is Earths Water? -How do the oceans become salty? The RUNOFF dissolves salt out of soil and rock, carrying it and other minerals to the sea. -If you took a sample of water what could you tell about the water looking at the mineral content? Whether it came from an ocean, freshwater lake or stream etc. -GROUNDWATER is found UNDERGROUND in water tables -Lakes are largers than ponds. My Background -The Water Cycle! Water evaporates. Rises. Condenses. And falls again. Powered by the sun! Lesson 1 How does water change state? -PRECIPITATION can take the form of rain, snow, sleet, or hail. -At higher altitudes the lower temperature causes the VAPOR to condense and form clouds. -If you put an ice cube out in the sun and one in the closet what would happen? The sunlight adds energy to the ice causing it to change state. -If you breath on a mirror what happens? The mirror becomes covered with water vapor. The mirror is cooler than the breath and the water condensed out of the

air. Or the beads of water that form on a bathroom window after you get out of the shower. Where is this water coming from? It is condensation from the air which is full of water vapor. When the air cools down from the glass it condenses. This is the same for clouds and rain.
