Sibby Thomsen freely admits it shes always had a sweet tooth. That sweet tooth has fueled a passion for baking shes had nearly all her life. Nine years ago, Thomsen took the plunge and made baking her full-time job by opening Sibbys Cupcakery in San Mateo. When its something youre passionate about, it doesnt feel like work, Thomsen said. Originally from Kansas, Thomsen, 41, moved to the Bay Area in 1996 and had a career in advertising. She works more now as the owner of Sibbys than she did before switching jobs, but said the change wasnt a huge adjustment. It was something Id wanted for a while, and people I knew were very
supportive, she said. Though bakeries focused solely on cupcakes were unheard of at the time Sibbys opened in 2004 (before Sprinkles Cupcakes), Thomsen said the cupcake craze began around the same time. Over time, people began to find out about the bakery and knock on wood, things are still going strong. Sibbys now has customers who keep coming back year after year to get cupcakes for the same events, Thomsen said. But for Thomsen herself, cupcakes werent a new idea. Shes always loved them and said they were the most practical choice for her business to focus on. The confections have multiple advantages over other desserts like portion control, the Outback Steakhouse

Thomsen said, but quality has to be the priority. Thomsen considered branching out in the past with savory cupcakes but decided against it due to the bakerys space constraints. And she said shes happy with what the bakery offers now. If you do something really well, its enough, she said. Ive always loved places that specialize and do a couple of things really well. While Sibbys Cupcakery has a core
range of flavors that stay the same, were always coming up with fun new ideas, Thomsen said. Seasonal flavors also pop up like strawberry and smore cupcakes. Customers can even create their own unique cupcakes by mixing and matching the cake, frosting and filling flavors. Its difficult for Thomsen to pick her favorite flavor of Sibbys cupcakes. Some days shes in a chocolate mood and other days she craves coconut. It
really depends on the day, she said. Though Sibbys is focused on baking cupcakes to order, its location on South Railroad Avenue is still a place where people can swing by and get a cupcake for themselves, Thomsen said as long as you get there before they sell out! Sibbys caters many events for kids like birthday parties, but also welcomes orders for adult events like cocktail parties or weddings. Theyve even

made cupcakes for parties celebrating television finales and premieres, like Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey. When Sibbys Cupcakery first opened, Thomsen said she could leave for lunch and close up shop, but long gone are those days. Today, the bakery has a loyal base of customers and delivers cupcakes anywhere from San Francisco to Sunnyvale. Despite Thomsens background in advertising the success of Sibbys has been mostly based on word of mouth, and the quality of Thomsens product. [The cupcakes] kind of advertise themselves, she said.
