A laid-off engineer trying to rebuild his life gets caught between science and religion in a battle over the origin of the universe and the existence of the soul.
"The God Patent really drew me in, not just because of the hard-charging plot and the vivid characters but also because this story is wrapped around one of the central conflicts of our time: faith in science versus faith in religion. Ransom, to his credit, avoids easy or didactic answers. Instead he pulls readers into a dense and nuanced argument that leaves us buzzing with questions."

The memo said they’d get bonuses for submitting patents, so why not? Concealed in engineering jargon, Ryan submits a patent for the soul disguised as a software algorithm and Foster submits a mix of Creation and the Big Bang as a power generator. Two years later the economy collapses and both are laid off.
Ryan McNear loses his career and family to a tangle of misunderstandings and petty crimes. When the Constable shows up with an arrest warrant, Ryan flees Texas and lands in California’s wine country determined to reclaim his life and son.
After being laid off, Foster Reed goes to Evangelical Word University and discovers the loophole in quantum physics that he believes God used to create the universe. Funded by a military contractor, Foster builds a power generator that will link science and spirituality, proving the existence of God and the soul – if it works.
Dodge Nutter, conman, attorney and landlord of a Victorian mansion turned apartment complex, takes a percentage of Ryan’s patents in lieu of rent and devises a scheme to screw Foster out of some serious cash – the cash Ryan needs to see his son again. But convincing Ryan to betray his friend is harder than Dodge expects so he throws his sister, Emmy, into the fray and lets nature take its course.
Emmy Nutter, a passionate University of California physics professor (based on Emmy Nöther, the German Jew contemporary of Einstein), leads the scientific establishment in exposing Foster’s bogus science, but first she must teach Ryan enough physics for him to understand how the God Patent violates the laws of nature.
Katarina Ariadne is the screwed up, death-obsessed adolescent math prodigy next door.
The God Patent is not science fiction, it is suspense literature with authentic Brian Greene-style science.
Quantum physics and artificial intelligence collide with faith and free will, sex and drugs resulting in a description of the soul that requires, not a leap, but a mere step of faith.

The God Patent tackles the biggest question in the universe in a brand new way. Who knew science could be this entertaining? Ransom Stephens takes on technology and existentialism, mixed with religious fervor, in a novel that will provoke the ultimate water cooler conversation. --Kemble Scott, author of the bestselling novels The Sower and SoMa
This book is truly amazing. It combines philosophy, theology, science, humor, and great characters all in one outstanding story. This is that rare book that makes you seriously reconsider and reevaluate your idea of what the universe is all about. It is engrossing and fascinating, the kind of book that makes you sad when it's over and you want to read it all over again. I can't wait to see what comes next from this talented and intelligent writer!! --Miles Dylan
Ransom Stephens is an exceptionally gifted writer who tells a engrossing story with skill and panache. You are with him at every step of the way. His characters are real, his insights profound. It's a mind provoking gem of a novel. Barry S. Willdorf
This rare gem, a page-turner, asks what, if there is no god, is the essence of humanity and vividly and sensitively answers that question by following the travails of a physicist through his darkest and brightest moments.
I was curious on how you could read a book on-line ..It was so easy to read on line that i found myself up to chapter 10 before realizing it. I like the surprises.
Beautifully crafted and thought-provoking. This novel brews a spellbinding literary alchemy -- a thrilling plot, characters who drive you to tears and to laughter, and a premise that is at once timely and timeless. Of course the writing itself is superb! Bravo Mr. Stephens! Will there be a sequel?
This story of life, physics and spirituality will blow your mind. You won't put it down until the last page, and when you look up, you will see the world in a totally different way.
I couldn't put this book down! It's fun, it's compelling, and the characters are so well-drawn that I fell in love with at least one of them (no fair telling!). In fact, at the last page I suffered post-novel depression; I yearned to spend more time with these people I'd come to know so well. In sum: I was totally along for Stephens' literary ride -- so invested that parts of the story touched me to tears. I look forward to more from this author! --Ann Clark, Founder "Sacred Wilderness"
