PERFORMANCE REPORT

OVERVIEW
A frequently asked question regarding the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing
platform is how well their storage system (S3) performs with their computing platform (EC2).
As an FTP service that runs entirely within the AWS cloud, HostedFTP.com has, based on our
internal performance data, created this report to discuss the performance you can expect
when storing and retrieving files between an EC2 instance and S3.
This report covers April 2009 and builds upon the methodology as outlined in our first
report. For more information please see the February 2009 report.

ANALYSIS
Our analysis focuses on the data presented in Appendix A and B

STORING FILES (SEE APPENDIX A)

The performance when storing files starts at 0.07 MB/s for small (< 100 KB) files and
reaches up to 12 MB/s for large files. This gives a fixed cost of 230ms along with a variable
cost of 10 MB/s per storage operation.

RETRIEVING FILES (SEE APPENDIX B )

TThe performance when retrieving files starts at 13 MB/s for small (< 100 KB) files and
reaches up to 15 MB/s for large files. This gives a fixed cost of 0ms and a variable cost of
15 MB/s per retrieval operation.

CONCLUSION
From our analysis we can conclude the following:

1. The fixed cost when storing a file has increased while the variable cost performance has
remained the same.

2. The fixed cost when retrieving a file has decreased while the variable cost performance has
increased to 15 MB/s from 10 MB/s.
