AMAZON S3 & EC2PERFORMANCE REPORT
OVERVIEW
A frequently asked question regarding the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computingplatform is how well their storage system (S3) performs with their computing platform (EC2).As an FTP service that runs entirely within the AWS cloud, HostedFTP.com has, based on ourinternal performance data, created this report to discuss the performance you can expectwhen storing and retrieving files between an EC2 instance and S3.
This report covers April 2009 and builds upon the methodology as outlined in our firstreport. For more information please see the February 2009 report.

ANALYSIS
Our analysis focuses on the data presented in Appendix A and B
STORING FILES
(SEE APPENDIX A)
The performance when storing files starts at 0.07 MB/s for small (< 100 KB) files andreaches up to 12 MB/s for large files. This gives a fixed cost of
230ms
along with a variablecost of
10 MB/s
per storage operation.
RETRIEVING FILES
(SEE
APPENDIX B )
TThe performance when retrieving files starts at 13 MB/s for small (< 100 KB) files andreaches up to 15 MB/s for large files. This gives a fixed cost of
0ms
and a variable cost of
15 MB/s
per retrieval operation.
