n a world of limited resources, an architect has to focus on the essentials that can add value and style to homes, thecommunity and the environment.This is the working philosophy of Normandy Architects,Inc., a Pampanga-based company that was founded 25 years agoby Arch. Normandy Nunag Canlas. It specializes in commercialand residential planning and design, interior design, utilitiesdesign and installation, construction and fabrication.A graduate of the Mapua Institute of Technology in 1982,Architect Normandy, as fondly called by his clients, subscribesto the principle that “ technical knowledge, combined withdesign sensibility, drives the pursuit of architecture. “Armed with his diploma, professional license and a dream, hedid pursue an architectural practice on a two-pronged agenda:a high level of client service and design excellence. attention to budget and schedules, state-of-the-art technology and the highest standard of design. “He wanted the name Normandy Architects, Inc. tobe “much more than just an architectural trademark”as he envisioned every project to speak of thecompany’s cumulative effort, professional service,discipline and valuable relationship with the client.While the company was still new, it already took theright course of adopting a very hands-on operation,involving itself with construction and paying carefulattention to client’s specifications. Work was driven by ideas and no small detail was left to chance toensure the integrity of a project.Eager to take on projects or commissions of challenging and interesting diversity, the youngfirm steadily built a portfolio that includes morethan a hundred residential projects, commercialbuildings, various SM City stores in Pampanga and Metro Manila, Robinsons Mall stores in Pampanga,a public market, restaurant chains, apartment and townhouse buildings, the St. Vincent FerrerCathedral and the St. Raphael Estate, a residentialcommunity, the Laus Group Corporate Center, and the Guagua Rural Bank Plaza, all in San FernandoCity. Architect Normandy also participated in thedesign and construction of the burial tomb planned for the late president Ferdinand Marcos in Fort Bonifacio in Makati City and the renovation of theMarcos family’s ancestral house in San Juan, MetroManila. He also had some architectural design stintsin Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.At present, several projects are either on the drawingboard or in the construction stage, including a proposed seven-storey home for the Marcos loyalistsin San Juan, Metro Manila and “an intensivedesign proposal” for a permanent burial tomb forFerdinand Marcos on top of a hill in Paoay, IlocosNorte. Normandy’s design bested more than ahundred design proposals from other designers hereand abroad. Other projects include the Dreamland Resort Hotel Estate in Subic; a four-storey Hotel in Angeles City; a Bible College complex in Bamban,Tarlac and several high-end residential buildings at the world-famous Lakeashore Estate and in other plush subdivisions in Pampanga and Metro Manila.One of Architect Normandy’s most significant  projects at present is the HSBC Savings Bank branchin San Fernando City, Pampanga. Reputedly thebiggest project in that city today, the bank is part of the HSBC Group which is represented in the countrythrough the Hongkong and Shanghai BankingCorporation Limited and its subsidiary, the locally-incorporated HSBC Savings Bank (Philippines) Inc.“ We have a diverse set of clients, “ says Architect Normandy. “ Successful projects align strategy,architecture and planning with the widest, most imaginative definition of the client’s vision, “ hecontinues. “ Normandy Architects, Inc. knows thevalue of forging relationships – with clients, colleagues and the public.
