Great Idea to a Great Company takes you through the essential steps of building a successful company. Included are such topics as forming a vision, creating a product, formulating a business plan, the basics of marketing (including a special chapter on small business web marketing), finance, production, patents and all the elements, formal and informal, that pull the whole process together. All major points are illustrated by examples drawn from the author's and his family's invention-based companies.
Larry Kilham is from the third generation of a family which has produced notable inventors who became successful business people. The author, a Sloan School of Management graduate from M.I.T., has three patents and a prestigious IR-100 award. He is running his own gas instrument business in his native Santa Fe, New Mexico and is a director of several high tech companies.
PRAISE FROM THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN THERE
"He's "been there, done that" and makes it highly readable. My favorite chapters were the first and the last, but there is much gold lying between."
- F. Gregg Bemis Jr. Top management of three Fortune 500 companies, and participant in 40 start-ups.
"Larry Kilham has diligently conveyed his principles of entrepreneurial vision. His book superbly documents all the wisdom and knowledge that I have gained in my many associations with him. It is a valuable text on business written by an entrepreneur who has actually experienced all the facets of starting and growing a successful technology enterprise."
- Richard T. Meyer, Phd., Former Director of Georgia's Advanced Technology Development Center, Professor Emeritus, Emory University Business School, and current CEO of CIC Photonics, Inc.
"Great Idea to a Great Company by Larry Kilham is both a thoroughly practical and delightfully readable book. Any aspiring entrepreneur will find a treasure trove of advice and practical tips - from the "must do's" to the "definitely don'ts" - delivered with humor, anecdotal illustration, and rich reference to the author's own adventures and successes in business. If you ever dream of starting your business, don't even put a toe in the water before reading this wonderful book."
- Gale Griffin, writer and corporate communications consultant. Previously she was Vice President Corporate Communications for Bestfoods, a worldwide company.
"As a former banker and public official, I admire the wisdom contained in Larry Kilham's book. A banker's job is easier because of the planning and analysis recommended in the book."
- Luther H. Hodges, Jr. Former Deputy Secretary of Commerce, former Chairman North Carolina National Bank
