Being Revised by Superintendent and BoardOur Call to Action: Pursuit of Excellence
Dear Staff, Parents, Students, and Community:Over the past nine years, Montgomery County Public Schools’ (MCPS) improvement efforts have beencarefully guided by our detailed strategic plan, Our Call to Action: Pursuit of Excellence. Our communityvalues quality, aspires to high standards, and insists upon accountability. All three elements undergird theplan and drive our work. Each year, we evaluate where we are, assess our performance, and adjust ourplan to ensure that we are truly building a school system where every child has the opportunity to succeed. We are striving to create a school system, and indeed a community, where academic success is notpredictable by race, ethnicity, disability, language proficiency, or poverty. We believe this update carriesus further down our path to this critical goal as we continue to address matters of equity in every school. The extraordinary improvements in student achievement during the past nine years is a direct result of theoutstanding work of our staff implementing the Board of Education’s strategies and initiatives manifestedin the strategic plan. We have worked not only with staff members, but with many partners—includingparents, other elected officials, business leaders, and civic and community leaders—to create a living, working plan that provides guidance in the development and implementation of programs and budgets toimprove teaching and learning. There is no question that it is essential for an organization to be committed to its plan if it is to makesustained systemic improvement. Indeed, the success of our system rests in large measure on thecommitment of our individual staff members—more than 22,000 of them—to carry out the work of thisplan each and every day. We ask a great deal of our employees in order to provide the highest qualityinstructional program and support services to nearly 138,000 students, and we are proud of all that theyhave done to make MCPS one of the most respected school districts in America. In this new edition of the plan, we continue to refine systemwide alignment to ensure that the overalldirection of the school system continues to focus intensely on eliminating the achievement gap and raisingacademic achievement for all. In this update, we provide greater clarity to our work to address issues of equity and race that remain barriers to our ultimate goal of eradicating the gap. This new edition coincides not only with the continued rise in student achievement, but also with greaterstakeholder and community involvement in the development of programs and initiatives. We will continueto refine our strategies and efforts so that we will ultimately reach our goal of creating a school systemwhere every child graduates with the preparation necessary to succeed in college and the world of work.We will continue to strategically work to eliminate barriers and address difficult issues that stand in theway of that success.Sincerely,Shirley Brandman Jerry D. Weast, Ed.D.President, Board of Education Superintendent of Schools
