What is Financial Aid?
It is nancial help i you are enrolled in aneligible program and meet all other eligibility criteria. Financial aid is money provided toyou to assist you to meet college costs. It canbe git aid (grants and scholarships) or sel helpaid (loans and part-time work). Federal, stateand institutional unding are three sources o nancial aid. Grants are ree awards that arebased on nancial need. Grants don’t have tobe repaid unless, or example, you are awardedunds incorrectly or you withdraw rom schooland owe a reund. Scholarships are non-repay-able awards based either on merit or specialtalent alone or on merit and nancial need.Student loans are available to students or theirparents at low interest rates with repaymentusually deerred until ater graduation. Work-study employment allows students to earnmoney while attending school.
IMPORTANT
I you withdraw rom all o your classes within the rst 60 percent o the paymentperiod measured in calendar days, you’ll owea portion o unearned aid back to the ed-eral government. The college will also owe apercent o the reund o the institutional costs,and any amount that the college repays will bebilled to you.**Reer to “Federal Repayment Policy” onpage 8 or inormation on this issue.
Who Should Apply?
U.S. citizens, nationals or eligible non-citi-zens can apply or nancial aid. Many actorsare considered when awarding aid. You do nothave to be poor to qualiy, but you must provenancial need. You must have a high schooldiploma or GED beore nancial aid can beawarded.

The U.S. Department o Education will beeliminating mass distribution o paper FAFSAsto schools and libraries with the 2008-09 FAF-SA. This change will save money and reduce waste. We encourage you to submit your Free Application or Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)online at

Transfer Students
 All transer credits as well as all SFCCattempted course work will be included as at-tempted credit hours. You must have at least a 2.0 minimumGPA ater transer credits are evaluated to beeligible or nancial aid. I you plan to transerto SFCC during the year (i.e. spring 2009 orsummer 2009) you must:1. Contact your current school and tellthem o your plans to transer.2. Make sure the SFCC Federal schoolcode--001519--is listed in Step Six onyour Federal Student Aid Report.3. I you are receiving a Federal DirectStudent Loan or a Federal Family Educa-tion Loan, you must cancel the loan with the school you are now attendingand reapply or loan eligibility at SFCC.I you are a transer student with a GPA less than 2.0 and you are attempting to qualiy or aid in subsequent terms, you must either:1. Raise your cumulative GPA to at least a2.0, or2. Earn a minimum term GPA o 2.5 orenrollment o at least hal-time status.This must occur in your rst term atSFCC.
Critical Enrollment Information
Maximum eligibility or unding is basedon a ull-time enrollment status; however,part-time students may be eligible or nancialaid. Per ederal regulations, a student’s nancialaid must be calculated by determining thestudent’s enrollment status based only oncourse work applicable to the student’s degreeor certicate at SFCC.Enrollment status categories or undingare as ollows:Full-time status is 12 credit hours ormoreThree-quarter time status is 9 to 11credit hoursHal-time status is 6 to 8 credit hoursLess than hal-time status is 1-5 credithoursStudents who plan to register or less thanull-time enrollment status should pay close at-tention to the eligibility requirements listed oreach nancial aid program (see page 5).The ollowing are examples o enrollmentstatus and nancial aid eligibility:A. Melissa’s program o study is Associateo Arts (AA) 1133 and she has com-pleted all o her SFCC degree require-ments (60 credits). During the all o 2008, she is registered or 13 credithours o prerequisites required oradmittance to the upper division o astate university that she wants to transerto in the spring o 2009. Because herall 2008 courses do not apply to herdegree at SFCC, her nancial aid enroll-ment status is zero hours and she is noteligible or nancial aid.
