I left the bathroom, wandering towards Charlie’s room as Bella flew past me to answer the front door.I pushed the door open, a barely inaudible creak giving the hingesaway.I sat down on Charlie’s bed. I glanced around the room, showingdefinite neglect of tidiness. Even his fishing rod hadn’t been put away,Clearwater’s death had really been a hard blow.I stood up aimlessly and began folding clothing. I made a neat stack on the dresser, I heard the front door open, the soft click of the latch lettinggo it’s hold on the frame work.A moments long pause.I heard a car idling outside in front of Bella’s house and also the soundof three more heartbeats. I dropped the shirt I’d been folding on the bed and paced on silent feet to the window. Two Indian boys were in the car. Thethird heartbeat was closer to Bella, up near the house. I couldn’t see downthat far and I didn’t want to get any closer to the window. Already the breeze blowing in was tainted and disgusting to my nostrils.“Hey…” Bella’s voice drifted up to me from the floorboards.Charlie’s room was somewhere over the hall and living room. There was a pause, I heard Bella’s teeth grate together in frustration, I was curious. It didn’t surprise me when her tone was exasperated. “She’s not here,do you need something?”Bella was obviously referring to me. How did Black know I was here – or supposedly had been? Perhaps I carried a stench that was repelling tohis sense of smell as well? Were those folk lore’s more then lore? Then I heard his voice for the first time. It was deep and coollydistant. He was probably put out with her for having a vampire in her house.I chuckled to myself, keeping my tone muted and the sound didn’tescape far beyond my own lips.“You’re alone?”“Yes.” I could see Bella glaring at him by the tone of her voice.“Can I talk to you a minute?” Black quarried.Bella sighed. “Of course you can, Jacob. Come on in.”There was silence for a moment. No one moved downstairs. Ifrowned. Then I heard heavy foot tread. Jacob entered the house. I could tell because the nasty redolence got heavier: I tipped my nose away from theopen door. The footsteps paused in the hall.“Slumber party?” His sarcastic voice.

“Yes.” Bella was fuming; I could hear the benevolence in her tone.“What’s it to you?” She shot back at him.Her friend ignored it, “Where’s your ‘friend’?”I wondered where I was supposed to be.“She had some errands to run. Look Jacob, what do you want?”
Oh
. I hadn’t mentioned anything about running errands; she must havemade that up in the heat of the moment.Black didn’t answer, but I heard his heavy tread moving towards thenext room and he began pacing.I rolled my eyes to myself and picked the shirt up again. I folded itand snapped it to a crease with a flick of my wrist. I added it to the stack of Charlie’s clothes. I made the bed during the silence downstairs – if youcould call those heavy footsteps silence. How did wolves sneak around likethey were suppose to if they were so freaking noisy?“Hey, what’s your problem?” Bella demanded suddenly.“I don’t like having to be here.” He was grudging.
Funny, that was mutual as far as I was concerned. .
This would get on Bella’s nerves anyway. I waited for her sarcasticcomment to fly.“Sorry you had to come.” She snorted. “Why don’t you tell what youneed so you can leave?”I wondered if her relationship with this Jacob Black fellow wasalways so belligerent.“I just have to ask you a couple of questions, it shouldn’t take long.We have to get back for the funeral.”
 Hmm
.“Ok, get it over with then.”
 Bella, Bella, so impatient
. I chided, smiling to myself.“One of the Cullen’s is staying with you?”“Yes, Alice Cullen.”“How long is she here for?”I listened. I was wondering that myself. What would happen next? This mess I had started by coming in the first place – no, by watching her when Edward had asked my not to – seemed to have no end.“As long as she wants to be. It’s an open invitation.” Was Bella’sreply.I frowned. That wasn’t what I really wanted to hear. What did I wantto hear? Her telling me to leave? Of course not, but – My mind cut off that track when I heard Black’s next words, theymade me stiffen bodily.

“Do you think you could, please –“ He stressed it sarcastically,“Explain to her about the other one, Victoria.”I heard Bella’s sudden increase of breath and knew why.She answered a little shakily, “I told her about that.”Jacob Black was pacing again. Suddenly he stopped in the middle of the room, probably in front of Bella, “You should know that we can onlywatch our own lands with a Cullen here. You’ll only be safe at La Push. Ican’t protect you here anymore.” The words rushed out from him like fear.I rolled my eyes and snorted without making a noise,
what? Did hethink I was going to just walk off and leave her in danger? Well, perhaps hehad a point, but that hadn’t been my decision.
“Ok.” Bella said slowly. “Is that all?”“Just one more thing.” Jacob took a deep breath.“Yes?” She was waiting, more patiently now.Jacob took another deep breath and exhaled, “Are the rest of themcoming back?”Bella said nothing.I shut my eyes in frustrations with this Indian.“Well?” He prodded.“No… they aren’t coming back.”She sounded dull, lifeless, again.Jacob didn’t seem to express an opinion one way or the other on thematter. “Ok, that’s all.”Bella’s voice turned bitter now, “Well, run along now. Go tell Sam thescary monsters aren’t coming to get you.”It didn’t phase him. He only repeated. “Ok.”I heard his unmistakable footsteps striding towards the door and thenhe stopped.I heard a soft whimper escape from Bella. She was crying – the kindof silent crying she did when she didn’t realize she was even crying.Black stood still a moment. I listened carefully. I wished he would justleave so I could go downstairs to comfort her.“Bella?” His voice was suddenly very different. I frowned warily.“I did it again, didn’t I?” He asked.
 Did what?
“Did what?” She echoed my thoughts.I heard him cross the room to where she was.I stood up and moved towards the door, it couldn’t hurt to be closer incase – The smell hit me full in the face through the open door way.
