Hometown Heroes RemarksMay 16, 2009
As Written by Mark W. SmithDelivered by Chief Clerk Gayle Kershner
I would first like to congratulate and thank Mrs. Kelly Bradley for her outstandingeffort to honor our veterans with the Hometown Heroes banners. Her efforts have goneabove and beyond and have made this a success for the people of Bradford County. Tothose who participated I am sure you are especially proud that you have the opportunity
to share a piece of your family’s or friend’s sacri
fice and service with fellow residents. On behalf of Bradford County I would like to thank everyone for their participation andeffort. It is only appropriate, in honor of those who took it upon themselves to serve inour armed forces, that the rest of us should take it upon ourselves to do the utmost tohonor that service, to honor what they gave and continue to give. For those that served inthe past continue to give us the gift of remembrance, and it can be said that remembranceis one of the most significant and powerful attributes of our own nature. It offers us the
chance to reflect upon the most significant moments in our lives and in our country’s
history. We can recall those moments in which some gave all or a good portion of themselves to ensure the general well being and prosperity of every one of us here today. It is always their selflessness that provides the constant inspiration and devotion, theongoing sacrifice and service that continuously carry forward the democratic ideals of ournation. We need also to remember those who are serving today, those who choose a wayof life that in many ways is a sacrifice in itself. Not to mention the day to day dangersthat many are facing at this very moment somewhere in the world. This act of remembrance, of their current service and sacrifice, calls attention to another importantattribute of our nature, appreciation. We must appreciate the truly honorable and specialpeople that this county and counties like ours across the nation have in our armedservices today. As citizens we must be vigilant never to let our appreciation of theirsacrifice become tired. By always being vigilant we can ensure our appreciation neverfalls short, never succumbs to apathy and never falls prey to indifference. It is ourresponsibility to foster these constant acts of appreciation.
