To: Kim Powers <kpowers11@gmail.com>Sassafras:(Majestic AND Sassy)Here I go, here I go, here I go again. Girls, what's my weakness? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITeuaqcpckc) Well that, and popculture. Well that too, and actually being on time with things. Regardless, welcome back to another edition of Pop! Goes the Culture.Look at you people, getting lucky with all of these double issues.Since this is technically the first issue of May, I must ask - who celebrates May Day? Up until college, I had never heard of May Day.I'm still not exactly sure what it is, because Wikipedia is telling me that it's the International Labour Day and well, I believe everythingWikipedia tells me.But to my friends in college, May Day is when their parents/neighbors/maybe other strange people put candy on their doorsteps. Nowhey, look, I'm all for surprise candy attacks. In fact, I wish there were more SCAs in life (little less stabbing, little more peppermintpatty grabbing?). But a country so freaked out about the safety of Halloween candy randomly places candy on a doorstep, waiting tobe spliced with drugs and razor blades?Furthermore, where on earth did this tradition start? I know, I know, why don't I just google/wikipedia/microfiche it? The answer? Istarted to, but then found an article linking to two news stories: one about pudding pummeling (http://www.baristanet.com/2009/03/riding_in_cars_with_pudding.php) and the other about watermelon attacking (http://www.baristanet.com/2009/04/food_throwing_ mischief_continu_1.php) and...wait....what were we talking about?Let's just get started, shall we?

Music:
(Gorky. AKA, El Duke)1) El Dukehttp://www.myspace.com/myfriendeldukeEl Duke hail from Albany, NY, but they have the spirit of the south in 'em (and that phrase for some reason makes me think of this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qi-axn_aUtowell, not that particular video, but the phrase). A plethora of people, instruments, andsounds, It would not surprise me if this band also had an actual kitchen sink in the lineup. It seems right now they're more of a liveband than a recorded band, but I think this is a group to look out for in the future.2) Sleep Outhttp://www.myspace.com/sleepout

This band does not make me want to sleep at all. Sure, there's something tranquil about the lead singer's vocals, but it's balancednicely with something driving melodies. While you can hear plenty of influences in their music, they still manage to have a rawnessabout them that makes for pleasant muggy summer nights.3) Grammaticshttp://www.myspace.com/grammaticsMusic, and more specifically bands, will always be complex even at their most basic. Drums, guitars, vocals. There's a bit going on,and therefore, if just one of those things are gripping and compelling, it can make for a fulfilling listen. In the case of Grammatics, it'sall about the vocals. Owen Brinley not only has great tone, but there's something so layered in his vocals - not quite broadway/choir dramatic, but enough flair to make you take notice.4) Gorky's Zygotic Myncihttp://www.myspace.com/blankhavenI had never heard of this once-Welsh band before, but after seeing them mentioned in Pitchfork's 5-10-15 with Gruff Rhys (LOVE thisfeature, by the wayhttp://pitchfork.com/news/35116-5-10-15-20-gruff-rhys/) and seeing they had a song called "If Fingers WereXylophones", I knew I was in love. And I also knew it would cause me to write horribly constructed sentences. Anywho, bummer I'm just discovering these guys now. They're weird with pop undertones and a dash of Spanish flair. Just how I like my Welsh bands tobe.5/1 Tracklist:1. The Boo Radleys - Wake Up Boo2. Cody Chesnutt - 5 On a Joyride3. El Duke - Little Bohemia4. El Duke - Stitches5. Hecuba - Miles Away6.
