designed the T-CAT to keep tubular handling to a mini-

OTC Report
OTC 2005 Focuses on Sustaining the Success of Offshore Industry

New technologies and new ideas to sustain the

growth of the industry overflowed at this year’s
Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), bringing a
record 51,320 attendees to Houston for four days. The
conference was held 2-5 May at Reliant Center at
Reliant Park in Houston.
“Industry leaders gathered in sessions focused on
the future of financing the offshore oil and gas indus-
try to meet the world’s increasing energy demands and
on recruiting personnel to replace the aging work-
force,” said Rod Allan, OTC ‘05 Chairman. “Those
who participated in these sessions took part in creating
history — some of the industry’s brightest minds dis-
cussed ideas that will define the course of the industry
during the next decade.”
Allan added that an array of new technologies was
presented for the first time. The Spotlight on New
Technology program highlighted 14 innovative tech-
nologies that are already making the industry more
successful.
The 51,320 participants in 2005 represent OTC’s
highest attendance since 1985 – arriving from 110
nations around the world.
The exhibition at OTC this year included 2,087
exhibiting companies, totaling more than 410,000 net
square feet, filling all available indoor and outdoor
space.
Navigating the show was much easier than in past
years since the show moved into the Reliant Center.
This year you could feel the confidence of the oil and
gas industry in the air. The mixture of Salsa dancers
and exotic race cars inside and bands outside
increased the feeling of optimism. The evening par-
ties, such as the incredible event that Cameron put on,
pretty much said it all.
The exhibits were large, expensive looking and
even extravagant in some cases. Many of the larger
exhibits had full-service bars tending to the many vis-
itors to the booths.
There also seemed to be more large hardware,
characteristic of the past. The incredible models of
ships and platforms would still stop you in your tracks.
The outside exhibit area grew also, and with the
perfect weather conditions all week, made cruising the
outside exhibits a pleasure, especially the welding
demonstrations at the Miller booth.
The 2006 OTC, “New Depths. New Horizons,”
takes place 1-4 May at Reliant Center at Reliant Park.
