The ‘first generation’ open air museumswere set up in Scandinavia at the end ofthe 19th century. Over the next 80 yearsmany others followed in Switzerland, theNetherlands, Eastern Europe and NorthAmerica.Set up to highlight the value of regionalbuildings which contribute so much to ournational identity at a time when manyvernacular buildings were becomingvulnerable to destruction or radicalchange, they became the repositories of‘unspoilt’ structures which could be read associal documents, particularly of rural lifebefore the industrial era.The meeting will include visits to themuseum’s buildings, a concert in itspainted, mediaeval church and aseminar discussing the vision,extraordinary diversity and benefits ofopen-air museums in Europe.
