It is known as conjuctions. A conjuction is a word that joins words, phrases or sentences. It performs no other function. Conjuctions can be devided intofollowing classes--Coordinating conjuctions-Correlative conjuctions-Subordinating conjuctions
 
COORDINNATE CONJUNCTIONS
and,but,for,or,still,yet,so,otherwise,nor,neither,either,as well as,etc.
They join the same type of grammatical
units e.g. noun with noun, adjective withadjective, phrase with phrase & clause
with clause.
Ex- 1. Many men AND women came to seethe fair.
