BOOK TWOPART 1
Chapter 1
December 28th“Marissa …Marissa Jones.”“Oh sorry…um…the square root of two,” I answered quickly.“Correct. Please sit up and pay attention.” The teacher turned around andbegan writing on the board again. I copied the information mindlessly. I didn’tcare about this stuff, and I didn’t want to be there.These people are so boring. I hated trying to blend in, trying to be“normal.” I don’t understand how people can live like this. They do the same thingevery day. Sure, we have schedules, but at least there’s some variety. Thesepeople are controlled by a bell. They jump up and hurry off at the sound of it. Thesad thing is, they don’t know any different, they are used to it. I on the other hand, felt like I was going mad. This day was different though.A lady from the office made an announcement over the loud speaker.Immediately, the teacher spun around, looking panicked. “Everyone away fromthe door and someone turn off the lights.” He ran to the door and shut it.Meanwhile, all the students were cramming themselves into a corner inthe back of the room. I was so confused. I couldn’t possibly think of anything thatlady could’ve said to make everyone do this. The teacher was fumbling with his

keys to lock the door. His hands were shaking so violently that he could hardlyhold the keys, let alone get one in the door.I was in no hurry to cram myself into a corner, so I took the keys from himand locked the door. He looked at me as if I was crazy, but he seemed toappreciate it. He hurried to the back of the room and motioned for me to follow.Reluctantly, I did.Then I saw a shadow through the opaque window in the door. The otherssaw it too. No one moved or even breathed. Suddenly, the glass shattered. Theshadow put his hand through the window and turned the knob. He enteredcautiously, holding a gun out in front of him.Without thinking, I sprinted at him and tackled him. He didn’t even havetime to blink. He was strong though. As I struggled to get the gun from him, theothers stayed huddled in their corner. Part of me wanted to just run out on theseidiots, but I could never have done it.Fighting was not my specialty, but I kept him pinned for a few minutes.Then he jerked the gun free and I knew I was in trouble. Somehow, it ended upunderneath me and he fired it right through my gut. The others screamed. Hepushed me off him. The bullet had gone straight through, and I was losing a lot of blood.He got up slowly and picked up his gun. His hands were shaking, but thatdidn’t matter. The students had made themselves one huge target. He had a onehundred percent chance of hitting someone. I opened my hand and concentratedon the gun. I pictured the gun in my hand. My fingers tingled. I extended my arm.

The gun flew out of his hands and hit mine. It would’ve been much moreimpressive if I had caught it like Lady Magmilan used to do instead of it bouncingoff my hand and skidding across the floor, but at least I had done it. This was thefirst time I had successfully moved anything more than a couple inches. Now Ifelt my wound finish healing.The boy made a move for the gun, but I jumped up quickly and grabbed it.He ran for the door. I held my hand out toward the door, and it slammed shut.Two for two! I couldn’t help but smile, the excitement pumping me full of adrenalin. He turned around with his hands in the air. I had to figure out what todo fast. I had to get out of there before the cops showed up. They wouldn’t carethat I had just saved these people. I would be arrested with the boy.“Does that closet lock?” I asked the teacher. I didn’t get an answer.“Hello?” I waved the gun to get his attention. I didn’t do it threateningly; I didn’teven mean anything by it, but some students screamed anyway. He finallynodded. “Get in the closet,” I commanded the boy. He did. “Keys.” The teacher tossed them to me. “Which one is it?”“Gold,” he said weakly. There were three. I put the gun in my pocket. Thelast key fit. When I turned around, the teacher was standing there pointing anodd-looking gun at me.“What are you doing?” These people were really starting to make meangry.“I can’t let you leave.”
