may have been in theminority but I neverlooked forward to whenmy girls returned toschool at the end of sum-mer.Some parents dread thelast day of school becauseit means that the kids arehome for a couple of months.I, however, loved having the girls home for thattime. It meant we couldtake day trips, hang out with friends and give us abreak from the routine.Regardless of whetherparents love having thekids home for the summeror if they enjoy whenschool starts, I don't know any parent who looks for- ward to the struggles of getting kids prepared forthe new school year, get-ting them up every morn-ing or the battles thatsometimes accompany homework. One aspect of summer-time that kids love is thatbedtime is usually a lotmore lax. When I was akid, there was always aSunday morning (a cou-ple of weeks before schoolstarted) that my parentsspoke the dreaded sen-tence: “Starting tonight, you’re going to go to bedearly so that you can getback in the habit of school.”That was always the firstsign that the paradise of summer was going to justend up being another

childhood memory. Whether that “trick” of my parents worked, they knew that getting theirfour kids to wake up ontime for the first day of school might be as prob-lematic as having snow onthe first day of school.Parents can opt to cutthe kids off “cold turkey”from the all-night play-time or they can transi-tion their offspring by bumping up the bedtime15 minutes earlier eachnight until the properbedtime is achieved.Regardless of themethod, their teachers will appreciate the sup-portive home atmosphereof getting children to takeschool seriously.Unless you have a stu-dent who loves everything about school, parentshave to find ways to excitetheir children aboutschool. When the kids are younger, that can some-times mean taking themto buy a special lunchbox, binder or backpack. Whenmy niece was in elemen-tary school, we would goto her house to watch herfashion show with all theschool clothes she had just purchased. If you have older stu-dents, school can often beviewed very differently than when they were younger. The stress levelof older kids is something that can affect theirschoolwork, desire tostudy or even their behav-ior in class. Giving theman activity to alleviate thatstress is important.Marching band, sports, theater and extracurricu-lar clubs are ways to keepthe kids motivated aboutschool, while giving thema safe outlet to relievestress.Balance is something that every human needsto learn the value of to ful-fill their obligations as well as make life moreenjoyable.“All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.”Isn't that a proverb thatmany of us grew up with?Teachers will agree thatthey don’t expect each of their students to go homeand study continually until bedtime. Homework is important, but by giving  your student extracurric-ular activities to pursue, you teach them the valueof time management, social interaction andbeing part of a group. If there's not an activity that
