A mother and her 6-year-old daughterare working their way down a darkenedhospital hallway, hand in hand. [Thehallway doesn’t need to scream that it’s ina hospital – shiny oors and a generic lookought to be enough.]Innocent-sounding piano music, vaguelyreminiscent of a nursery rhyme, plays inthe background. There’s nothing creepyor ominous about this music at all. It’swarm, comforting and innocuous. At the opening of the shot, they looktentatively around, as if they’re starting torealize that they’ve lost their way.The mother turns the knob to one door. The door doesn’t open. The mother’s hand tries another door, asher child begins to get visiblyanxious and restless. Still no luck.In rapid-re succession, we see theirhands trying a series of doorknobs. The pair is seen making their way to thenext door, as the tension builds. It seems as if their search may befruitless. The mother nally opens the right door. The room is bright and welcoming. A nurse, waiting expectantly, warmlygreets them as if to say
“you found it!”When it comes to healthcare reform,we’re all looking for the same things. But we don’t have time to try everydoor. We need a plan for reform that willachieve the right results the rst timearound. We can do a lot better than agovernment-run health care system. If you want to learn more and join theconversation, you’ve come to the rightplace.

The scene appears to be at a convention –a nicer hotel or conference centerenvironment, full of people who are thereto do business. Suits, pantsuits, nicer dressgenerally, lots of the same muted tones. They look like Washington people. Thesound is mainly the growing din of conversation. Everything gets slowlylouder and more frenzied. Maybe theestablishing shot is a wide frame of themultitude, and it slowly zooms in over thecourse of the spot.Snippets of conversation, almost yelledout to be heard over the noise, areaudible:
“…pre-existing conditions? Nobodyknows yet…”“…of course the system isn’t ready forthis. But I don’t see how you can slowit down…”“…yeah, a lot like Medicare…”
Other background phrases include:
Government-runWhat about lines?Larger systemRising premiumsIndividual mandate
As the camera searches the room, or con-tinues to narrow the frame afterbeginning at a wide focus, an olderHispanic woman comes into view. She’sstanding quietly in the middle of the ac-tion, as if she found herself at the wrongparty, and doesn’t know a soul. The background noise is dialed downsignicantly, enough to hear her say to noone in particular:
“Will somebody justtell me whether my Al will still be ableto see Dr. Ferguson if we go throughwith this government plan?”
Although nobody stops to notice her, oreven stops talking, the question is metwith silence. She maintains a concernedlook, waiting.
The plans for health care reform beingdiscussed in Washington will have veryreal consequences for all of us. Let’smake sure we know what we’re gettinginto. To learn more about what currentplans for government-run health caremean to you and your family, you’vecome to the right place.
