EVAGELISTIC TALKSBY GIPSY SMITHCOPYRIGHT, 1922BY GEORGE H. DORA COMPAYForewordTHE chapters which follow in this volume revealGipsy Smith. They discover his mind and heartprocesses in a way that is both accurate and unusual. It was my good fortune to be on the platform justbehind the evangelist while he was delivering theaddresses which are the make-up of this book, and notonly hear them all, but, as Chairman of the ExecutiveCommittee conducting the campaign, to have in handthe details connected with their delivery. They were Gipsy s noonday addresses delivered inRyman Auditorium, ashville, Tennessee, on theweek-days, Saturdays excepted, from February 12th toMarch 12th, 1922. The auditorium has a seatingcapacity of five thousand, but the crowds were so greatthat the building was not only packed at the noon aswell as the night hours, but vast numbers were turnedaway unable even to get inside the building. The sensational feature of these addresses, however, apart from the spiritual results of the message, wasnot in the crowds attracted, but in the wonderfulversatility and swift mind and heart reaction of thespeaker. The plan used at the noon hour was this : Each daya local pastor was teamed with the evangelist. Thelocal pastor occupied the first ten minutes, speaking on

vi Forewordsome passage of his own selection from the Bible.Gipsy was not only in complete ignorance of what thelocal pastor was to speak about, but also of his identityuntil a moment before he arose to speak, when Igave the evangelist the pastor s name, and he waspresented by Gipsy to the audience. Thus withoutany previous special preparation, without any time inwhich to form an outline or assemble thoughts savethe ten minutes of the first speaker s address, in entireignorance of what the theme was to be, the marvellousaddresses in this volume were delivered. AD THEYWERE IVARIABLY O THE THEME AD THE SCRIPTUREPRESETED BY THE LOCAL PASTOR.Gipsy s address followed the first speaker s, not in ageneral way, not in a few introductory sentencesswitching into a digression, but closely and logically,so far as the central theme was concerned. For this reason, these chapters in a striking wayreveal the man. He has the resourcefulness of thegreatest of preachers. With a mental grasp swift, accurate and original ; with a command of simple wordsfull of colour and action ; with a delivery free of alltricks and affectation ; with an eloquence sweepingfrom tears to smiles, mastering the mind, fusing thepassions, capturing the will, Gipsy Smith reached inthese impromptu addresses at ashville a height of pulpit power the writer has not known surpassed. To find satisfying explanation, one needs to go back to Pentecost.JAMES I. VACE.
