Certified Lay Ministers are laypeople serving out their call as a disciple of Jesus Christ.

A Certified Lay Minister (CLM) is a qualified United Methodist layperson called to congregational leadership as part of a ministry team under the supervision a clergyperson, but who often serves the church in many other ways.

A person wishing to become a CLM enters the certification process, which includes training, support, supervision and accountability, while serving in a local church assigned by the District Superintendent.

CLM Modules 1 - 4 are part of that training.

At the end of this second module, Practice of Ministry, a prospective CLM will be able to:

* Recognize that Christian worship is the congregation’s encounter with our Triune God in the power of the Holy Spirit

* Plan and organize a Sunday service of Christian worship
in our tradition that reflects teamwork in designing and
leading worship

* Demonstrate an understanding of the unique gifts of your
congregation for offering outstanding worship.

* Discuss the role of scripture in worship and how the
lectionary may be a valuable plan for selecting scripture
for each Sunday service.

* Demonstrate an understanding of the forms of prayer and
develop skill in helping your congregation offer its
ministry of prayer well

* Discuss the importance of praise in worship

* Develop a plan for choosing music and other acts of
praise in a worship service

* Demonstrate an understanding of the theology and
practice of the two sacraments of our church, Baptism
and Holy Communion

* Describe your role in leading or assisting in other acts of
worship including weddings, funerals, and other local
worship traditions

* Design worship in ways that will intentionally include
persons of all ages in your congregation, especially
children and older adults
