At the age of 97 years and 4months, Shigeaki Hinohara isone of the world’s longest-serv-ing physicians and educators.Hinohara’s magic touch is leg-endary: Since 1941 he has beenhealing patients at St.Luke’sInternational Hospital in Tokyoand teaching at St. Luke’s Col-lege of Nursing . After WorldWar II, he envisioned a world-class hospital and college spring-ing from the ruins of Tokyo ; thanks to his pioneering spirit and business savvy, thedoctor turned theseinstitutions into thenation’s top medicalfacility and nursingschool.Today he servesas chairman of the board of trustees at both organizations.Always willing to trynew things, he has published around 150 books since his 75th birthday, includingone “Living Long,Living Good” that hassold more than 1.2million copies. As thefounder of the NewElderly Movement,Hinohara encouragesothers to live a long and happylife, a quest in which no rolemodel is better than the doctor himself.

(interview by JUDITKAWAGUCHI)Energy comes from feelinggood, not from eating well or sleeping a lot. We all remember how as children, when we werehaving fun, we often forgot toeat or sleep. I believe that we cankeep that attitude as adults, too.
An interview with a 97 year oldJapanese Doctor on Longevity
It’s best not to tire the body withtoo many rules such as lunchtimeand bedtime. All people who live long re-gardless of nationality, race or gender share one thing in com-mon: None are overweight.. . For  breakfast I drink coffee, a glassof milk and some orange juicewith a tablespoon of olive oil init. Olive oil is great for the arter-ies and keeps my skin healthy.Lunch is milk and a few cookies,or nothing when I am too busy toeat. I never get hungry becauseI focus on my work.. Dinner is
veggies, a bit of sh and rice,
and, twice a week, 100 grams of lean meat.Always plan ahead. My sched-ule book is already full until2014, with lectures and my usualhospital work. In 2016 I’ll havesome fun, though: I plan to attendthe Tokyo Olympics! There is no need to ever retire, but if one must, it should be alot later than 65. The currentretirement age was set at 65 half a century ago, when the averagelife-expectancy in Japan was68 years and only 125 Japanesewere over 100 years old. To-day, Japanese women live to bearound 86 and men 80, and wehave 36,000 centenarians in our country. In 20 years we will haveabout 50,000 people over the ageof 100...Share what you know. I give150 lectures a year, some for 100elementary-school children, oth-ers for 4,500 business people.. Iusually speak for 60 to 90 min-utes, standing, to stay strong. When a doctor recommendsyou take a test or have somesurgery, ask whether the doctor would suggest that his or her spouse or children go throughsuch a procedure. Contrary to popular belief, doctors can’tcure everyone. So why causeunnecessary pain with surgery Ithink music andanimal therapycan help morethan most doctorsimagine. To stay healthy, always take thestairs and carryyour own stuff. Itake two stairs ata time, to get mymuscles moving. My inspirationis Robert Brown-ing’s poem “AbtVogler.” Myfather used toread it to me. Itencourages us tomake big art, notsmall scribbles. It says to try todraw a circle sohuge that thereis no way we
can nish it while we are alive.
All we see is an arch; the rest is beyond our vision but it is therein the distance.Pain is mysterious, and havingfun is the best way to forget it. If a child has a toothache, and youstart playing a game together, heor she immediately forgets the pain. Hospitals must cater to the basic need of patients: We allwant to have fun. At St. Luke’swe have music and animal thera- pies, and art classes.Don’t be crazy about amassingmaterial things. Remember: Youdon’t know when your number is up, and you can’t take it withyou to the next place.Hospitals must be designed and prepared for major disasters, andthey must accept every patientwho appears at their doors. Wedesigned St. Luke’s so we canoperate anywhere: in the base-ment, in the corridors, in thechapel. Most people thoughtI was crazy to prepare for acatastrophe, but on March 20,1995, I was unfortunately provenright when members of the AumShinrikyu religious cult launcheda terrorist attack in the Tokyosubway. We accepted 740 victims and in
two hours gured out that it was
sarin gas that had hit them. Sadlywe lost one person, but we saved739 lives.Science alone can’t cure or help people. Science lumps usall together, but illness is individ-ual. Each person is unique, anddiseases are connected to their hearts. To know the illness andhelp people, we need liberal andvisual arts, not just medical ones.
Life is lled with incidents. On
March 31, 1970, when I was 59years old, I boarded the Yodogo,BW shares to Sen. Lacson whenhe was still with the PNP, and thesource of his wealth despite his being a modestly-paid militaryman all his life.“But not one senator has calledfor the probe of Mr. Lacson, even though double murder is acapital crime and the possibilityof plunder is present,” Say said.Say said as Ethics C ommitteechair, it is Lacson who should
rst submit himself to a probe to
prove that he has the moral as-cendancy to investigate possiblewrongdoing of his peers.“If they want a no-limits probe, then there should be no excep-tion, not even Mr. Lacson as Eth-ics Committee chair,” Say added.

a ight from Tokyo to Fukuoka
. It was a beautiful sunny morn-ing, and as Mount Fuji came intosight, the plane was hijacked by the Japanese CommunistLeague-Red Army Faction. Ispent the next four days hand-cuffed to my seat in 40-degreeheat. As a doctor, I looked at itall as an experiment and wasamazed at how the body sloweddown in a crisis.Find a role model and aim toachieve even more than theycould ever do. My father wentto the United States in 1900to study at Duke Universityin North Carolina. He was a pioneer and one of my heroes.Later I found a few more lifeguides, and when I am stuck, Iask myself how they would dealwith the problem. It’s wonderful to live long. Un-til one is 60 years old, it is easyto work for one’s family and toachieve one’s goals. But in our later years, we should strive tocontribute to society. Since theage of 65, I have worked as avolunteer. I still put in 18 hoursseven days a week and loveevery minute of it.
