Massachusetts: Targeted Strategies Help LatinosImprove Diabetes Outcomes
In Massachusetts, the prevalence o diabetes is higher among Latinos (7.4%) than among whites (6.4%). Overall, Latinoresidents are 15% more likely than white residents to have thedisease. For people o Puerto Rican or Dominican descent, theprevalence o diabetes is 11.8%, which is nearly twice as highas the prevalence or whites.o address these health disparities, the REACH Latino HealthProject in Lawrence, Massachusetts, is working to raise awareness o diabetes andits complications and teach community members to eat a healthy diet and be morephysically active. Te project is based in theGreater Lawrence Family Health Center, which provides administrative support andaccess to other community programs andservices.o reach its target audience, the projectdistributes inormation on how to preventand manage diabetes that is culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate orlocal Latino residents. In addition, theproject has partnered with local health careproviders to promote appropriate healthmessages or this population. Te goal is toimprove health outcomes or Latinos living in Massachusetts. As a result o these eorts, Latinos withdiabetes who are clients o the GreaterLawrence Family Health Center havereported dramatic improvements in theirability to control their blood sugar andblood cholesterol levels. For example, the percentage who hadreached their blood sugar goal (hemoglobin A1c level less than7) increased rom about 15% in 2001 to 42% in 2007. Tepercentage who had received an annual u shot increased rom39% in 2001 to 50% in 2007, and the percentage who hadreceived an annual oot examination increased rom 12%in 2001 to 43% in 2007. In addition, the percentage whose
blood sugar levels had been measured within 6 months (which is
recommended or adults with diabetes) increased rom about56% in 2001 to 70% in 2007.
