"The main reason for publishing this dissertation now, more than forty years after it was written, is historical: it contains what seems to be the first presentation and discussion of the aggregate of ideas that was revitalized a decade later by Geach, Donnellan and Kripke and has come to be known as the New Theory of Reference. For this reason, the text of the original dissertation has been left entirely unchanged. However, some improvements from 1963 have been appended as an
addendum."
