The 10 Biggest Search Engine OptimizationMistakes: #1: Wrong Keywords
The vast majority of websites haven’t got a clue about keywords. If you don’t know what words your  potential customers are using in search engines to try and find a business like yours, then it’s hardly worthwhile having a website.
The Meta Keywords Myth
Most people setting up a website guess at which words or phrases their potential customers might associatewith their business. These words and phrases are then thrown into the Meta Keywords Tag, with the belief that before long website visitors will start rolling in. Nothing could be further than the truth. The reality is that the right keywords have to be placed strategically in many areas of website coding beforethey can have an opportunity to positively impact an increase in right kind of visitors from search engines. However, before the correct placing of your keywords can be considered, you have to make sure that you’reusing the right ones for your website.
Making sure you choose the right keywords
There are many websites that let you search for how many times a particular keyword or phrase wassearched for on the Internet over the past month. Once of the best and most popular is the Free Wordtracker Keyword Tool:http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/ This free-to-use research tool should be experimented with to determine the single best keyword phrase for the most efficient optimization of your home page. It’s extremely tempting to research the most commonly searched for word in your industry, and thenoptimize your website for that word in an attempt to attract as many website visitors as possible. Animportant factor to bear in mind though is that thousands if not millions of websites in your industry will becompeting for those single keywords. The trick is to aim for your website to be on the top page of searchresults for Google, Yahoo and MSN search results for a keyword phrase that is moderately popular for your industry.
How to choose the right keyword phrase
Your chance of appearing in the top page of search engine results is greatly enhanced if you focus your website optimisation efforts on two or three-word phrases instead of single words. But how do you choosethe right keyword phrase?Start by typing what you think your most popular industry keyword would be into the Wordtracker Keyword Tool. You will then be shown other phrases that contain your chosen word, and the amount of times that word has been searched for on Internet search engines over the past month.
An example of a good keyword phrase to aim for
For my websitewww.PurpleInternetMarketing.comI initially considered the word ‘Internet’, because Iadvise businesses on how most effectively to use that medium. Although it’s searched for on average over 600,000 time for each month, the reality is that I have no chance whatsoever of ever featuring in a top pageof search results for that word.I then briefly considered the phrase ‘Internet Marketing’. This is still too popular as well though, as it issearched for over 200,000 times a month

I finally opted for the keyword phrase ‘Internet Marketing Training’ which although isn’t searched veryoften (around 100 times a month), the kind of traffic that these searches bring in to my website will beextremely targeted. Also – I can target at least one different keyword phrase for every page… and there’s nolimit to the amount of pages that I can have!
The 10 Biggest Search Engine OptimizationMistakes: #2: Wrong Page Title
Your page title on your home page is the biggest indicator to search engines of what your website is about. If it doesn’t succinctly explain exactly what your website offers, as well as containing your keyword phraseas discussed in Search Engine Mistake #1, then you’re missing out significantly on website visitors.
What is a website page title?
The page title is the writing in the blue bar at the top of a web page, and originates in the Meta Tags, whichare a set of instructions for search engines and technicians at the beginning of your web page. These MetaTags are not displayed in the normal view of your website. However, (assuming your are using InternetExplorer) all you have to do is click on the ‘View’ tab at the top of the page and then select ‘Source’ to viewthe code behind your website.Your page title will be in-between the two ‘HTML Tags’ (which indicates the start and end of the pagetitle).Your page title is also shown as the clickable title link displayed in search results, if your site has beenfound using a search engine query.
The most common page title mistake that businesses make
Most businesses are proud of their brand name. Unfortunately that means that they want their brand nameall over their website. Including all the areas that should be used for keyword phrases instead. BusinessesHAVE to find a way to take independent advice AND act upon it without their brand coloured glasses onwhen deciding on their website page title.
How to write an effective page title
A page title should be between 10 and 60 characters long – including spaces. Any longer, and it may be cutwhen appearing in search engine results. It should ideally JUST be the keyword phrase that you havedecided on for your page (Refer to The 10 Biggest Search Engine Optimization Mistakes: #1: WrongKeywords).A good example of an effective page title would be ‘Internet Marketing Training’.The second best example of an effective page title would also include the brand name – for example,‘PurpleInternetMarketing.com – The Internet Marketing Training Company’. This effectiveness of this titleis however diminished compared to the first example. The worst possible page title in this example would be ‘Purple’. If found in search engine results, hardlyanyone would visit the site because the title doesn’t denote what the website is about. In addition, thechances of appearing in desired search engine results would be reduced significantly due to the lack of keywords.Remember to think about all your website pages – each page title on each page should be optimized.
