<mailto:webmaster@sun-angel.com>THE WORKChapter Seven: Universal Laws* By James Westly </articles/pw/index.html#author> *------------------------------------------------------------------------Table of Contents <index.html> | More Practical Wisdom <index.html>Everything we have discussed to this point has concerned itself withevents and processes. It should, then, not be surprising that the eventsand processes themselves have governing principles, or laws. Events aregoverned by the Law of Three, processes by the Law of Seven, or Octaves. These are fundamental cosmic laws that are said to operate at everylevel of existence. Our concern, however, in this chapter, is how theyoperate in us.It is my intent here to discuss these laws strictly from a personalexperience perspective. Most discussions of these laws are fraught withintellect and theory, and give little example of how these laws operatein ordinary life. Yet, a practical understanding of their operationwithin us is essential for the expansion of our awareness.THE LAW OF THREEEvery event requires three forces in order to occur. There is a positiveor active force, a negative or passive force, and a neutral orreconciling force, also known as first, second and third forcerespectively. We must see this in the simplest circumstances of life.Picture yourself lying abed at dawn. Your intellectual centre is sayingto you, "It's time to get up!". Your instinctive centre is resisting,"Just ten more minutes." This tug-of-war may go on for some time withnothing happening. You feel paralyzed, experiencing the push and pullbetween the active, first, force and the denying, second, force.Suddenly you glimpse the time and realize you will be late for work. Theemotional centre interjects, "Ohmygod, I'm late for work." You leap outof bed, propelled into action. A third or reconciling force has entered.A friend of mine recently visited and parked his car in a privateparking lot. Upon preparing to depart he noticed that a tow truck hadarrived and had elevated the front of his car in preparation forremoving it. Insensed, he rushed out to the lot and began demanding thatthe driver lower his car, first force, his desire. The driver refused, citing how the rules had been broken and he was just doing his job.Second force, or resistance. They argued back and forth. At a pause inthe heated debate, I interjected that perhaps the driver would bewilling to do us a favor for which he would recieve a ten dollar bill. His whole attitude changed, the car was lowered, the dispute ended.Reconciliation, or third force had entered.First force can be seen as desire, Second force as resistance to that

desire. These are readily apparent to us in the play of life. We do not, however, so readily perceive the existence of the Third force. It issaid we are Third force blind. It is an aspect of our sleep, ourexistence in the realm of duality, that we are unaware of Third force. How much of our Unnecessary Suffering is the result of this blindness? In the second state of consciousness, waking sleep, we are incapable ofthinking beyond duality. We engage almost completely in formatorythinking. Remember, this term denotes our tendency to think in two's,yes and no, left or right, this way or that. It also is refering to ourinability to see beyond form to grasp the substance the form contains. So we become stuck it what seems to be irreconcilable contradictions. Weare constantly engaged in the struggle between yes and no and fail toperceive the third alternative that has the power to solve the dilemma. Also, notice in the examples given above that the third force was anemotion. In the first example, the intellect was first force, the bodywas second force, and the fear of being late to work was the thirdforce. So in this example we are driven into action by a negativeemotion. The next logical question to ask is how much of our actionshave motivating forces of this nature. How often are we propelled intoaction at the behest of a negative emotion?Everything we have discussed to this point has concerned itself withevents and processes. It should, then, not be surprising that the eventsand processes themselves have governing principles, or laws.
